View Full Version : Character : Tribute to akira
nanabaky 09-23-2003, 06:29 PM Ok, I have just started the modeling of a little statue of kaneda.
Here it is :
http://nanabaky.free.fr/cafesale/K11_2.jpg
It seams that the head looks more like tetsuo's head, but it needs hair to be complete... I'll try to make cloths as close as possible to the original concepts arts i could find
But it's a bit my own interpretation of this character
Any advice about how i could create the hair ? Shag or mesh, or anything else ?
(sorry for my poor english...)

It looks great but he looks like Tetsuo because he looks young. Make the jaw line more square, and forhead/top of the head less large.

akira is one of my favourite anime, it's genial as your idea to recreate one of his character in 3d. i'm really curious to see the progress, good luck!

oh, you have maked the jacket with polygons? they are ok for clothes too?
nanabaky
10-04-2003, 04:10 PM
well you can do everything with only polygone modeling. For every parts of this char, i started with a simple face... And i'll keep doing like that ;) That's not necessary the best modeling methode, but it's a choice.

I do agree. Thats how i model as well and i can do it very fast. I love polygons so kudos to that friend.

Well, i tried to continue my work on this char, with the time i (don't) have, and here it is :

http://nanabaky.free.fr/cgtalk_upload_wip/CGT_K22.jpg

I have modifed a few things (proportions, mesh...) and now i have to break the symetry of his jacket in order to add more details (a lot is missing !). I work with symetry, that's why you can see a line in the middle of his face... that's it for now ;) everything modeled with edit polygones only (3DSmax5).
oh that's looking really good! love the face man :)
Akira roolz
keep it up!!!

nope, it's Kaneda.
very nice indeed !
do you have any special plans for him? are you planning to animate him? or is it just a form of akira doujinshi art?

very cool. are you going to model the bike asswell?
the ending of akira still puzzles me. did tetsuo turn into a god? and did the explosion created a univers in some other dimension?
because the scientist was talking about the birth of the universe.
one of the best anime and manga's ever!

Good cloth modelling, but my crit would be that you shouldn't mirror the geo in this case.

Thanks for the comments everyone :D
Segmonia : ( Ah ah, kiyoko, poor little girl... almost as scary as sadako :D ) Well i dont plan to animate him... Very very difficult :/ I wanted to create a still, like a plastic figurine, you see ? mmh, what doujinshi art is ?
Niki & Evil : I think i won't make his bike... mmmh... after all... maybe... :) I would just like to finish his body, and find a ******* solution for modeling the hair :/ damned hair !!!
popnGEAR : you're right, that's why i've just broken the mirror and arrange each part of the clothes in order to make it very distinct. Other details will follow this modification...
Updates to come ! sorry, i've been very busy lately...
for the hair... do u 've tried with some plugin?
Which software u use?
(excuse for my bad english)

the term doujinshi is used to describe the art created by group of fans of a certain series/anime/pop idol/etc, in your case Akira.

Nice model.
I think your ear needs working.
Keep it up!
Akira's ROCK!

Niki : i use 3dsmax5, and i don't want to make realistic hair cuz i'm making a kind of little statue. I'll have to model them in an unique mesh, i guess... But it's not ideal :/
Segmoria : oh ! well, so, it's my case ( I really am a fan of akira ! but not an otaku ^^ )
good luck...
however your work is very fantastic...i love Akira

a while without update, here it is :

I just love the body, but I cannot say the same about the head.. there is just something off about it. maybe it is too big.
NickBFTD
12-24-2003, 01:32 AM
i have to agree with Juzz, i think the head is too big (it is true that children have large heads but this is too much IMO)
but the model overall is great *subscribes to thread*

Nah those proportions are just about dead on, if you take a look at Ottomo's work. I just whipped out my own copy to double-check.
That being said, the facial geometry does look more like Akira than Kaneda. However, that could just be the absence of hair. Several of Ottomo's characters have very similar facial geometry, with different hair.
I was always amazed at how simple his designs were, yet you seldom got confused about who was who...
Mind you I never could keep Ryu and the Colonel seperate in the black and white version :)

I tried my best to create hair with, finaly, real mesh... Here it is !
I am not really surprised that now with some hair, he doesn't look more like Kaneda than Akira (or whoever you want)... :(
http://nanabaky.free.fr/cgtalk_upload_wip/CGT_K26.jpg
Now I will begin his laser gun :]

Oh! Loved the Akira-movie!
But he looks a little... small, you know? Or his head might be too large, either way it's a great model! The trousers and the clasps is nice!
You said in the first post it was gonna be a statue, so youre not ganna animate him?
nanabaky
01-18-2004, 04:09 PM
thks :)
that's right, i'm not going to animate him... for the while. I first prefer to try a nice render :)

hey great modelling. It looks good. i'm not a fan of akira, but i think akira is a virus or something right and not a person? someone verify?
but otherwise looks good.

Virus? Wasn't Akira the guy that they chopped up and stored in the little jars? But... maybe I missunderstood too. *confused*

Super work... but i think the hands are not up to the overall
quality of the model... too tiny IMHO..
BTW your avatar gives me the crreeeps!!
Yeah!, looking damn wicked!
Are you going to model his bike also? because its a must if you are making a tribute to AKIRA :)

Thx guys, for the comments !
EVIL : you're right! but it's a lot of work, and i don't know if i'll have enough time !
Maximus Groff : Too tiny you think ? i'll try to arranged it soon ;) .
h3kno : Akira is not a virus but a little strange boy with amazing powers (the whole universe's memory !!! something like that, he's the next step of mankind's evolution).

I absolutely LOVE Akira! Glad to see someone doing a tribute to the film.
It seems there still is a lot of confusion about the film...as always. Nothing changes.
Kaneda's body seems fine, but as mentioned his head seems to large. The hair is off, but it's loads better than anything I can do! :)
Also, how come people kepp saying that kid's have big heads, etc...I thought Kaneda was late teens. He wasn't a child. Anyway, you said you were working from concepts so I may be in the wrong.
Keep up the outstanding work. Can't wait to see this finished.

Hey, your model is really coming along.
I checked out some pics - here is the one I was looking at:
http://www2.microwar.de/akira/charaktere/kaneda/images/Kaneda.jpg
Specific comments I have on the face- If you are looking to make this representative of the original art, the features of this character are small in relationship to the face, they are small in general. The nose is short, the mouth is tiny, the eyes are big and round and the chin is long - I know the eyes change alot depending on his expression.
The earlier posts seem to capture this better - and the eyes rolling back help sell the character alot as well.
The body is looking good, I would revisit the crotch area and watch the folds on the jacket. The hair could use more variation, it looks like you are repeating a loft, different size pieces and orientations might help.
Not to rip - this is a cool model, and if you take it all of the way it will rule! I know this is a ton of work- the last 10% is always the hardest 10%.

Sweet looking. Textures will rock!
I still think the head (if not changed facially) should still be slightly smaller. It just looks odd, but that may be just me! :)
Keep it up. Wanna see more!
