- Microcosmos 01

I tried to make it look like a photo taken with a microscope..
The character are fictive scaling information of somekind. :)

Thanx, but doesn't anyone have an advise for me how I can make it even more reaslistic.. Because the depth of field is made with photoshop. (btw: scene made with 3d max 5.1)

I'm not entirely sure what that should look like, but if you're wanting to make the depth of field more realistic looking (which is what I assume you're talking about) you may want to just do it in Max. It takes a lot longer to render (using multiple passes, usually 2 or 3 is good, I think) but it will perhaps give you the result you want. I believe it's in the camera settings, but you can also go to the help section and look up Depth of Field. Other than that, most of the, ummm, "thingies" look too flat on top. Perhaps if you made them look more round, but then again, I don't even know what I'm looking at (although the image does seem somewhat familiar). I dunno.... I hope I was of some help. Anyway, I like the image, it looks cool.

It is very hard to get a sharp image as you have with an ordinary microscope (It was a couple of years ago I took my metallurgy classes so bear with me.) But usualy you get a distortion both above the surface you are examining as well as the layers behind the focus layer gets blured really fast.

So, in order to make this look a bit more realistic you could consider making a dirty layer that the camera sees through infront of the image. Also the depth of field should be more distinct.

But I dont know... this image is nothing like the ones I used to examine for material disposition, so... well...

The second pic is certainly better and I really like the effect u have going. There are, however, a few things that you could do to make it better.
1st of all the depth of field is still far too deep.
The falloff on the texture could be reduced a tad, it looks a bit odd like that. there could also be a fill light so that the object doesn't look so black. Things under an electron microscope (which I guess u r trying to replicate here) have a very undulated surface so yoou could probably chuck some noise into the bump map.

For the best I've seen of this type of render, check out this thread:

Maybe that can give you some ideas as to where to take this...
