Title: Everything beautiful is far away
Name: Marek Denko
Country: Slovakia
Software: 3ds max, Digital Fusion, Photoshop, VRay
I spent on this one quite a long time. Not that it was too complicated but there were periods of time when I really couldn’t touch it for a several weeks. Some guys thought that I was dead not posting any new works. So here I’m once again. It’s about being far away from family, friends from everything you love and care about. Just an anonymous cold waiting areas of airport gates with strangers all around set to dime mood of cold weather and soft fogy sunset make your unwanted company. I know these days airports are quite modern and fancy… but it’s even more unpersonalised with all those duty free shops and fake Irish pubs and pizza restaurants with fake smile or without it. So take a minute and enjoy it.
Technically it was made in 3dsmax 2009, Rendered in Vray sp1.8a. Excluding the sky it is all completely 3d. Color correction and postproduction playing in fusion and photoshop. Rendered on i7 975 with 12Gb of RAM at 5000×2570px resolution and it took aprox. 15 hours to render at final quality. Dedicated to my beautiful family which I hope will never be far away from me.

As always you show hi-end quality in your artworks! One thing I really love is your works have not only high technical level but mood.
This airport reminds me similar soviet union airports I saw in my childhood. In fact, they are not particularly changed now :D
Congrats! Your work is stunnin' :buttrock:

Though there are some repetitions in the dirt on the window, I don t mind.
There is more than the technical side to images like this: It s telling a human story.
In this case it seems to have a lot to do with yourself. Thats okay.
What I like about your work is the color underlining the mood and the composition with the
old couple.
Cool thing and great work!

Hi,
this is a very nice piece you created here .. Very realistic rendering.. I love the floor and the reflections from the windows and the metal framings.. Really nice !
The mood is great.. I have felt this way a lot of times when being at an airport and think I know how the old man must feel. I especially like airports at night, when theyre empty, that makes it even more "interesting" , the feeling which I really like about it is this thought that you might just get ANY plane and be on the other side of the world in a matter of hours..
Lovely image !
Greetings

Beautiful!
How did you achieve the depth in exterior? Can you post the wireframe view?
Thanks,

Not often I comment on Front page material these days, but this is beautiful, there is beauty in dark subject matter, light at the end of the tunnel and all that.
It's the simple things but the floor texturing looks fantastic, so does everything else!

Hi marek, I have been always a BIG fan of your work. And this piece is truly amazing. I have been in this situation like many others waiting for your plane, in the crowd and yet alone with so much in your mind going on. And the mood, the atmosphere conveys exactly what you had in mind. 5 stars work! i am sure it will be featured in the next Digital Art master's series.

I am not going to join any conversation but really top notch work DenkoM.
Really I don't see any point to create in every way 100% realistic 3d (except recreating something what doesn't exist anymore, or at all, or will be expensive to shoot). So this piece is awesome I think, but
it will be cheaper and faster to take a photo. Truly insane work but for nothing, because we know, many people can do photo real render. Imho> the floor looks too wet and on top the reflection is like a water waves. Bit off.
Like I said, insane good but for no point.
-cheers

Thank you guys for you positive comments! For those who asked for wire frame i must say that I tried to but characters were just a black solid areas due to high res mesh export directly from Zbrush so it's kind of useless to post... that was the reason why I posted the shaded render...
Cheers!
Then Can you post the render without fog and haze? It will be really helpful. I really look forward to how you achieved depth.
Thanks!

People tend to see 3D animation works technically, with what methods used, what process it undergone and many more. Yes, that is what animation artwork is all about. On the other hand, some people looks at the deeper meaning of the scene, they do have a lot of interpretations, they may be right, others may be "more" right, and absolutely, there is no wrong opinions for that depends on people's point of view. What I am trying to say is that with your work, you have well balanced approach to other artists and viewers. The way you did your masterpiece, it is exceptional. The way you conveyed your message to us about your family as your subject of your artwork, it really inspired many people.
To conclude, I really idolize these kinds of artworks, straight from the heart of the artists to the feelings of the viewers.
Nice job! Congratulations! :applause:

07-20-2010, 04:03 PM
That is just amazing. I never thought 3d art could look like that.
@drosa :
it seems you didn't understood the point here, first of all, not anyone can acheive that level of realism and detail ( i don't speak of photorealism, you can show any render to someone who isn't in the CGi world, he'll say it's a picture ) here we speak of technical mastering.
But technical isn't important if not at the service of communication, like you said, it's easier to take a photo. but even in photography, EVERYBODY can snapshot and push a button. Not everyone will take a photography who share emotions for the viewer, show an history, a context.
It's the same way in every art, movie, drawning, sculpture and so on, even our.

Wow, you basicaly re-created real life. It can't look better then this!
Hey, I don't know much about 3d, but I see you wrote that it took 15 hours to render.
So does this mean as you work on it you see some primitive version of the models? Then how do you know if you are getting the results you want in the final render? Do you have to resort to waiting 15 hours each time you want to check how its looking?

this is heartbreakingly beautiful work. truly a reminder we're all CG artists.
if you'll take one small critique from a lowly student: my eye goes to the plane in the foreground before the man or woman. it's just the nature of the composition, nothing from a technical standpoint.
either way, amazing. the muted colors, the tired and dated airport, the isolation implied between the characters, even the frozen clock, it all comes together so well.

Love the way you " tell the story " with the use of light and dark, what I don't get however is why the (old) man is standing resolutely looking away from the old woman sitting at the back.
If you want to "depect a life is better elsewhere" story it would look better if there wasn't a woman sitting at the left but maybe some long deserted corridor or something.
If you want to depict " the torn between family and work" story, it would be better to " pick" a younger man looking at the planes and a wife and a kid tearing at his arm urging to stay and pulling him the other way
Could be that I totally misread your image.
But those are my 2 cents anyway ;)

see through the glass, the plane gives me the feeling that my friend or someone will leave me far away.

Wow!!
This is exactly how I felt when I went back to my loved ones after countless days working in a city far away from my home. It really touched my heart. Sorry I don't feel like commenting on the technical aspect of the image as I'm in total shock and awe at this time and just enjoying the beauty of it.
Can I take your permission to take a print out of this art as I want to laminate it.

Fantastic job. Great eye for the details. The mood is consistent throughout this piece, even while showing different appearances of the exterior versus the interior. I like that they differ in their lighting and color, yet together work perfectly. Thanks for sharing!

Great mood and palette, and a Grandaddy quote to boot. And as someone who lives in Malaysia but has their family in the States, the emotion behind your story is dead on.

I love the sense of loneliness you get from the woman in the dark as she looks like she is 'longing' for the guy.
