View Full Version : Gnomon particle video question. Need Help!
Dave Hackett 05-26-2002, 10:42 PM I recently bought the first Gnomon dynamics video on particles. Unfortunaely, it moves really fast, and the video is obliviously made in EP mode so even if I try to freeze frame it, I can't see crap. I can't even see the settings on the screen when it's playing. (For as much help as these videos could be, they are not for a beginner.) Ok here's my problem. I'm using the sketch particle tool with a vortex and turbulence field to try and creat a Nebula like on the video. But when I hit play, the particles fly off, and don't spin slowly like on the tape. What gives?
Help!
Thanks,
Dave

i guess they lowered the conserve attribute of the particles. try to set them 0 or near to 0.
you may also need to increase the magnitude of the field a bit

can you describe in what way you're sketching the particles at first ? i mean that shape your painting ?

Basically, it's just a circle with about 8 lines going out in all directions. Like a star shape with a bunch more arms. So when you hit the vortex and turbulance fields, it twist slowly inot a swirling nebula shape. When it gets to where you want it, then freeze the shape and you have a cool nebula. Great idea, but I just can't get it to work.

ok i've tried the shape.
first leave all at the original settings and hit play but only for a few frames till everythings laid out and looks really like a nebula.
in the menu solvers select initial state for all dynamics and go back to frame 0.
then select the particles and set the conserve to 0. after that set the magnitude of the vortex field higher (25-50) try around and play till it mooves but the particles stay in the ring.
works for me here. if you still have problems write. then i put the scene file here.

Now nothings working... Just one of those days I guess. If you could e-mail me the file I'l scrutinize it here. That'd be way cool.
Thanks,
Dave

Would'nt you know it. It works now. Just when you sent the file. Thanks anyway. Cool thing though, huh?

ok have fun with the gnomon :)
could you please give me a review of the video. mean are the infos good etc. i currently write on my exam and collect reviews for books and all the stuff for maya. so it would be a great help.

Alvarez really knows his stuff, it's clear how versed in Maya he is. That's the good news. Th ebad is he just goes so fast clicking around and not saying exactly what he does. The video quality is poor at best. You can't see what his settings are even when it's playing and not paused. I could learn allot more if the quality was better and he'd slow down. Was it worth 60 bucks? Nope. just for those reasons. I had an instructor once who was the same way about his stuff. He knew it well, but was really fast and not readily available to clarify questions. I didn't get my moneys worth then either. I think allot of these guys treat this like a business, to get you in and out fast. That's not the way to learn.
