View Full Version : Submarine On The Atlantic, M|goecke (2D)
09-23-2003, 10:36 AM
Here is a picture i painted in Photoshop 7 with a Wacom board.
It took about 26 hours.
It shows a german world war II submarine on the atlantic ocean. I am a fan of this submarines class (like in the movie 'DAS BOOT').
First i just wanted to paint some waves. But then i added the sub.
I hope you like it! :)
<Edit by Leo: I put the CGNetworks picture in place of the one externally hosted>

this is done extremely well...

I enjoy any artwork related to subs.
09-23-2003, 04:06 PM
Damn that's awesome....
Very inspiring indeed
I better not run into this guy in a dark alley...friggin talented punk. *grumbles to self*:p
09-23-2003, 04:21 PM
That's just scary... How long did it take to make?
09-23-2003, 04:24 PM
Amazing! super! :applause: :applause:
09-23-2003, 04:25 PM
I love the way you've detailed out the waves. The coloring is awesome too. Keep up the good work. :D
09-23-2003, 04:27 PM
thats some work!
the sea is very effective
weany niggle (after looking at it for some time) there seems to be an issue with the foreshortening of the deck cut-outs - suddenly getting much smaller behind the tower.
i read earlier in the posts about putting in rain, i disagree, but, perhaps some more sea mist in the mid-long distance to add more depth to the picture? it looks fine as it is though
09-23-2003, 04:32 PM
about 26 hours :)
09-23-2003, 04:56 PM
I don't know how you are able to make it sooo beautifull, but it's is wonderfull!
Great work. Did you create the ocean all by hand? or did you adjust a picture from a real ocean?
09-23-2003, 04:58 PM
awsome technique you use on the waves. and the submarin has a great realism.
I can´t belive you did it in 26 hours...I culd not do something like that even if I draw for a week 24/7.
09-23-2003, 05:03 PM
Here you can see an early status of the waves:
!early status! (http://www.3dluvr.com/bitterman/painttemp/atlantik.jpg)
All painted by hand... :)
09-23-2003, 05:25 PM
Fantastic and highly original compared to other postings seen in these parts. If this image doesn't sell more Wacoms and Photoshops I don't know what will!;)
5 x
:buttrock: WOW! Wonderful work! :buttrock:
09-23-2003, 05:34 PM
i cant explain how much i love the water, the colors are just beautiful. Very nicely done :)
09-23-2003, 05:37 PM
Great Film, Good Painting ;)
The German Navy is still using Subs which look like the old Submarines in the WWII.
But they will be now replaced by a new class of Boats...
09-23-2003, 05:38 PM
amazing work man :applause: i liked "Das Boot"
09-23-2003, 05:39 PM
Wow ! just Wow ! :surprised :applause:
Amazing work really, i specially like the water!
09-23-2003, 05:52 PM
what else is there to say but
09-23-2003, 05:55 PM
The sky dosnt seem as detailed as the rest but this is a really awesome work.
09-23-2003, 06:07 PM
Wow, this is great!
I love submarines too and the VIIC is well recognizeable.
Great detail too.
Very well done!
09-23-2003, 06:16 PM
I this on the frontpage and I just had to take a look, one word........WOW!
I agree about adding rain, it lacks that downpore look. Where are they on the atlantic? its normally not that green the more North you go... I could be wrong.
09-23-2003, 06:55 PM
This is good stuff!
09-23-2003, 06:56 PM
Sky seems little too smooth, everything else is great
09-23-2003, 07:13 PM
Excellent work!!!
@Neox So lang sind die Haare gar nicht, aber mein Bart ist auf dem Bild gewachsen. :-))
09-23-2003, 07:25 PM
Looks great i will admit that, but there is one little problem...
Since the waves are comming from the left to the right, i would think that there would be a small wake on the right side, because the sub was blocking some of the waves. there then that , rain. Looks awsome.
09-23-2003, 07:29 PM
Its realy a fantastic piece of art. One thing i would suggest though, and that is to make the sea darker, because judging from the color it seems like the sea bottom is realy close and you can see the sand. It should be much darker if you want to show depth. Thats just my humble opinion, but it is great as it is, anyway.
09-23-2003, 07:38 PM
great great piece. i just looked at it and went wow :)
glad you added the sub :)
Becareful about having the highres version uploaded, sadly there are still unscoupulous art thieves about =[.
It is amazing tho well done ! :applause:
09-23-2003, 07:43 PM
i love the painting and the whole atmosphere..
but my only crit is that i think there is a perspective or a size diffrence problem, the people standing up there are really big compared to the overall size of the sub,i think the whole upper part of the sub seems really big ..but other than that its neat and i can see how hard it is to paint it.. but you did a great job ..
teach me ... :)
09-23-2003, 07:46 PM
The german submarines of this time were not very big. Compared to Photos the size of the poeple should be correct! :)
09-23-2003, 07:49 PM
excuse my ignorance on submarines ..i was just looking at it from a design point of view ,,,
09-23-2003, 07:54 PM
I love the atmosphere! Great colors and great work!!!
09-23-2003, 07:58 PM
Very very nice work. I love the whole setting, makes you feel like your in the middle of the ocean. Keeping to the WW2 era is also a plus. I think all WW2 work is interestoing.
09-23-2003, 08:20 PM
only 26 hours? i guess you took photo references...
09-23-2003, 08:38 PM
excellent finished piece!
altho I would take the *high ress* down ... there've been theives in these parts lately..
my only crit is the perspective.. the horizon line should be higher and the waves should get smaller, but this is only knowticable to a perspective nutt like me.
09-23-2003, 08:43 PM
i used old world war II photos to check the details of the sub. nothing more :)
09-23-2003, 09:11 PM
good ! great work :)
I like it !
09-23-2003, 09:24 PM
very good job on the waves and the light falling through the water, the guys on the ship seem to be a little tall. Would like to see more of your work.
09-23-2003, 09:34 PM
all i can say is amazing ! :buttrock:
09-23-2003, 10:10 PM
That is beautiful :D
wow, very sharp.
The water is remarkable :applause:
09-23-2003, 10:21 PM
Marc, that's really nice work. I, like you apparently, come from a traditional art background - realism - to which I still paint in oils, acrylics, gouache and watercolor.
I appreciate all the details that you painted - down to the rain drops that are coming off of the hand rails where the crew are standing. Nice indeed.
Keep up the great work! I also like scenes from WW2.
09-23-2003, 10:43 PM
Very nice, very nice indeed.
It's my wall paper now. Lots of people have complimented it at my office. Great attention to detail, I am really impressed.
I personally would love to learn how to paint water better.

What a wonderful piece, i have always been a fanatic reader of submarine warfare novels and non-fiction and this painting really captures that feeling of a small group isolated against all. Your palette is incredible. I think you have captured something here that seems to be missing in the few submarine paitings i have seen, and that is that sense of fighting the elements, as big as enemy as the destroyers and aircraft the undersea boats were arrayed against. An overall dramatic and dark sense to it, wow, one of the best paintings i have seen on here.
09-24-2003, 03:11 PM
Thank you very much! :)
