You should buy maya or max and read the help files.
For games youīll want to learn subdivision polygon modeling.
Try getting a grasp of Blender. Itīs free and there are lots of tutorials for it. Should you like it and get proficient in constructing good geometry you can transfer that knowledge later to any program.
Donīt spend thousands on commercial programs at this point.
Here are a few free and lowcost modeling programs for you to explore and get your feet wet.
Blender (http://www.blender.org/)
Wings (http://www.wings3d.com/)

I would suggest getting one of the major 3D applications - 3DS Max, Softimage or Maya - perhaps Zbrush instead of any of them (it's affordable), and learn that through online video tutorials. There are several excellent sites where you pay a monthly subscription - Digital Tutors, 3D Buzz, Gnomon, and then take it from there. Reading the help files alone may be the way for some, but it's a little bit like driving backwards - you can do it, but why would you? Part of following tutorials is that you learn a workflow. Simply picking up bits here and there can be confusing in a field that is absolutely vast.
So, anyway, learn a program well - perhaps a bit outside of the field you're interested in too, make some stuff, put together a demo reel with the best you can do and have done, and see if it flies.
