View Full Version : Character: Michael Jackson
Pi3141 09-23-2003, 09:38 AM Here is the start of my Michael Jackson caractature. After much consideration, I've done him in 2002-2003 style. In the peak of his freak look
No renders yet, just a few screenshots from modeller, and its still very messy.
Please let me know if you cannot see the image. My bandwith was exceeded on the other free site I was using, so those images have dissapeared and I was forced to find a new host. I hope this one works out because with my last choice, certain people could not view the images.

Thanks!
Ok, so I need to tone down the cheek bones just a little, and roll the chin just a little towards the lips? Sounds good.
What I hope to do. Is animate and lipsync him to Motown 25's Billie Jean performance. Of course over-dramatizing movements, and crotch grabs.
I hoped you would like him. I personally had trouble modelling him, I couldn't stop laughing, and the reference pictures (Michael jackson in court) were horrific.

Thanks!
These renders were done yesterday. Since then I've re-worked his facial structure taking the points already made into consideration. But I thought i'd show you these anyway. His body is currently being done now.
Does anyone have any tips of dismemberment during an animation? Like for example he grabs his crotch and it comes off in his hand? Or his nose flies off during a jackson twirl ?

EDIT: I just checked. Somtimes the picture won't show and instead there is an image stating that remote linking is not allowed. And somtimes when I refresh the image I uploaded is there. Let me know if you have troubles. It's getting harder and harder to find a free provider of webspace that allows remote linking. I'm broke so it's my only option too.

Here's some more facial expression tests.
Also note the refined cheek bones, and chin.
Endomorphs include, Jericurl controls, chin out/in movement, trademark MJ screams and expressions, and the usual, phenomes ect.
Some areas need doing. Like the inside of the mouth. Body is also almost done.

Can't wait to see the animation - this is going to be awesome...

The body is done. I'm happy with the proportions so far.
http://pisong.20m.com/mjacksonfinal.jpg
Leigh: Thanks! I too like the lower left render the best :)
Terro: I hadn't thought of a masked version but that's a cool idea!
Monty: The question is not can he do a moonwalk. The question is can I animate one? lol
Now, I have a few questions for anyone willing to spare the time.
How would I go about making a sequine look? I need black sequines for the jacket, and white for the glove to give it that authentic Michael Jackson look. Any Ideas?
Lastly, you may be a while waiting for an animation. I tend to have alot of trouble with rigging, that's why most of my characters end up just modeled. Not animated.
If anyone out there is feeling generous, and know how to do some nice good rigs (like the leg rig that comes with the Lightwave 7 cd. Where you move the foot and the body moves with it, that's really nice) Do you think we could do a trade off?
If anyone is willing to rig him for me, In return, not only can you keep the MJ model, and use him however you like.
Since I'm broke, for payment. Send me a photograph of yourself, and I'll make a complete Caricature model of you, for you. As payment. Does that sound good to anyone?
thanks!!!

One idea would be to have two separate models, for example...one with a nose, one without it...and swap the models at the point where you want the nose to fly off.
Or you could do a morph target for him without a nose, and fade it in quickly over one or two frames, and have a separate nose object which appears once the morph has occurred and then flies off.
Great work so far, man...really funny stuff! :applause:

And thanks Tommi. I'm glad you laughed. That's exactly the emotion I wanted to provoke. I'm very pleased.
BTW, the position for a character rigger has been filled. T4D has been very very kind and offered his services to me.
Thank you once again T4D!

no no, his glove is there. I just have no clue how to make a sequined sparkly look so it doesn't stand out as much as it should.
Your not alone. I too hope I can make him dance just like the real one haha.
Odrakir
09-25-2003, 10:07 AM
oh! I see it now. But i think he has had two different gloves, one with sparkles an one without them, but neither of them covered his fingers. I was searching in google, but I couldn't find any good quality pictures... and there's a big amount of pages about him (man... people is crazy, you couldn't believe what I saw).
What I did find was these:
This one so everybody can see that you are not far from his actual look:
http://www.2bitmedia.com/ricardo/imagenes_foros/mjcareto.jpg
And this one so you try to pose him like that, or any other of his tipicall poses:

Cool model, aren't his eyes a little to far apart? That'd be my only crit.

Can you make the nose as a seperate layer and use parenter throughout the animation and release the lock at the proper time? Not sure if that would work or not, but just a thought.
PaulyBarnes
09-25-2003, 08:17 PM
Ok, I tested out the whole seperate layer parent thing and works pretty good. I was able to make a head turn and fling off the nose with a whip. I believe with parenter you can also at a whim change the parented object. (EX: Hand grabs crotch and crotch tears off in had.).
Hope that helps.

Thanks for doing that bit of research for me Pauly! That will surely help.
Well T4D emailed me his first draft of Michael Jackson rig. It's working wonderfully so far. He certainly is very talented when it comes to rigging.
Here's a few quick poses I was playing around with. I also did some basic wardrobe changes just for fun.

Also, I forgot to add. I'm still after that sparkling sequine look if any out there has any ideas at all. If it could be done with procedurals that would be great. I've tried a few things but nothing that will actually sparkle, his glove just ends up looking wet.
thanks
I've got a procedural of a sequine look if you'd like...send me a PM and i'll send it to you:)

Thanks!
FacialDeluxe: This is the coolest community ever. The help is overwhelming!
Remi: Thanks! Yeah I've been tweaking with the preset since that image and have come up with some really good results. You'll see some more renders tomorrow probably. Thanks once again. Great preset you've made!
Also, I'm not sure what song to do the animation to.
I'm torn between four choices.
Bad
Beat It
Billie Jean
Smooth Criminal
I'd like to hear other peoples opinions. I may do a complilation of the songs too, and animate some wardrobe changes during the animation.
I've been listening to those fours songs since I started making MJ. I've found myself dancing more than working. But those songs tend to have that effect one people.
At the moment I'm preferring "Smooth Criminal" It's got some nice dance sequences that I could animate, plus I love the bass line "diggediggdug" say it fast :hmm:
Facial Deluxe
09-27-2003, 07:55 AM
Billie jean is the most used in animation, I think, I would avoid it not to loose the originality IMHO
Pi3141
09-27-2003, 07:58 AM
That's what I thought Facial Deluxe. I saw that Pan animation. While it was superb, That dance sequence has been done many times before.
That's why I think I'm leaning towards Smooth Criminal (pun intended)

BAD would get my vote! I always felt that the title stood in such a harsh contrast to Jackos appearance...the original video already had satiric qualities. Would be funny to see your toon proclaim that he bad,LOL.
BTW, great work! Thereīs no reason for someone like you to be broke, my friend. You obviously know your way around in LW.
Why not go totally off the deal and animate him to "I'm Fat" by Weird Al....hell you could use some of the same dance moves and I don't think that's been done before.:)....Plus it would have some comedic properties and since this is a caricature...I don't....just a thought:)
Pi3141
09-27-2003, 09:34 PM
CB_3D. Thanks for your kind words!
Remi: Thats a cool idea! Although if I was going to do somthing like that. It would be cool to come up with my own parody to one of his songs, somthing that suits the model well.
And finally heres the last still render I'll do. I think the model is how I want it now. T4D has sent me the final version of his Rig. It's simply fantastic! Thanks T4D!
It may be a while before I do the animation though. I've just been asked to do a model for someone, so personal projects will have to wait.
Thanks once again for everyones help, I think I'm going to put some stills together of MJ and post them over at the finished gallery since the model is complete.
Thanks!

most of his songs are about 2 - 4 mins long are you doing the whole song or just a section ?
3 mins of animation will take amonth or so
but it will be worth the wait

This is very cool... I totally missed this thread...
Can't wait to see him animated... I vote Smooth Criminal, it's one of his best songs, and most stylish video clips. If you used the style of the video clip (or just grab Moonwalker movie) it'd make for some great atmospheric effects...
Only crit is some of the mouth shapes... Looks like you've missed some points in the smile/sneer, and the mouth open/yell could be pushed alot more, making it open alot wider. ATM it doesn't really look like yelling as it's not open enuf. I assume you've included the back of his mouth/throat now too?
In the spirit of community involvement I'd be happy to look at them for ya if ya like...
Pi3141
09-28-2003, 02:57 AM
Thanks!
T4D. Thats why I was thinking of doing a 30 second chunk from somthing like smooth criminal.
Kretin. Thanks! I was thinking of doing a part from the moonwalker scene where he is in the bar towards the end of the film. Lightwave volumetrics would lend alot to that scene.
I know the morphs aren't perfect, but I've been working on a little tonight in between some other commitments. I've cleared most of them and started reworking them. The problem was the shape of the jaw and the lips. But after some reworking of the polygon structure at the corners of the mouth, everything is working much better.
I also had a problem closing the eyelids. Since they are so big and not a perfect sphere, about 80% through the blink morph the cornea would poke out through the eyelids, but I've fix that now too.
I've got another modelling project going on (renders will be up tonight) so I'm trying to find time to animate him in between, if I dont find the time, and too much time starts to slip, I'll pass him onto one of you to animate for your reels or websites as I hate wasting characters.
If you want....and are willing...i'll animate him for fun...PM me and let me know...i'd love to have a crack at him.:)
