i opened a thread over in the WIP forum but i didn't get any c&c that helped ..
well to start over .. i'm a kind of newbe in maya, started with 3d studio r3 some time ago.. over max1 to 5.. due to some favoring of a game developer of mine i switched to maya a year ago.. never realy accomplished any task i gave myself.. this is my first real head i finished .. the modelling was done in about 3 or four days.. well the skinning and painting the textures took me along time to learn .. the shader system also..
i'm still having problems with the shader.. i have a basic lambert with a bump .. and a ramp in the incandescence of the lambert .. to make the thingy soft.. but i dunno howto make an oil map or alike..
anyway.. its mental ray render, with final gathering, hair done in shave [ <- textures not updated no skin / hair blending yet ]
ok no more talking.. here it is .. please help me abit ..
its going to be a monk now i think, i will add more detail around him later ..

well i dont think i can offer technical advise, but i can say a few things.. (and im comming from a hyper realism standpoint)
nostrils shouldnt have so much light inside them, maybe even give him some NASTY nostril and ear hair.
hes so wrinkly but not in the forehead/eyebrow area, do u see that as odd?
also the wrinkles are too exsesive...its almost exahusting to the viewer to look at. tone them down in areas and let them dominate sparingly in choice locations.
there also a bit unrealistic, they flow like rivers on his face. you shold try to get some good rinkle reference.
eyes seem o.k. need some long lashes.. or just scragly ones
try to put maybe some blemishs and noticable black heads on his nose and cheaks
lips need the different skin texture,,,the lil cracks an stuff in em
might wanna add that 5 o'clock stubble on his upper lip too?
its loooking quite decent so far.

thx .. yeah .. as i said the textures are not yet finished .. sure .. there are alot of wrinkles in the lower half and up to none in the above area.. the thing is .. i wanted to exegarate on wrinkles ..
i tried not to go for realism but for style .. or something inbetween .. just to play around with abilities maya got.. like displacement or artisan tools .. like for the wrinkles :)..
and that dude is supposed to be darn old, by still being harsh and evil at the same time .. but i will concern this deeply
and the things with the little cancer marks would be cool too, good idea, will add that proberbly.. and yeah the eyelashes .. i was fighting with the hair for about a week, lashes to come ;))

long time no see.. struggled around with lights, hair etc..
what i've got now is the character which should be finished up to now .. and the background but i can't get it to render .. so its white for now ..
some C&C would be welcome

i finished the most final shots in the last weeks... that'll be it for now .. i don't have anymore time to do much more besides my civil service and my application portfolio for an animation school in germany..

You keep posting from the same camera angle. Can you post a front and side view? Some wires would be helpful too, just to give good crits, and all.

I'd put him in a different environment :/ the monk 's great but the background... well, what about green or yellow? Like a forest or something? The blur 's okay though.
My point is: he looks freaked now, like he is stoned or something.

the overlapping thing on the cheek bones makes him look like a klingon, they should be more fatty and not so taught and stretched.

yeah right there are alot of things to be tweaked, i wanted to change alot of things during construction process. but most times i was to far on to go back a step an redo everything.. the time ran out so i had to look for what i planned it to be in the main part..
an freakd out old .. over exegareted character, who has drastic expression without any muscle movement..
anyway .. the background is f*** up .. i'd like to do a real 3d tree and better lightning .. with a real moon etc.. but that'll take me another month to figure out outdoor lightning with moon object tree etc... shadow thingy..
i will render some other perspectives the next few days..
but thx for now all your comments were very helpful.. i hope i'll get the time later on to fix some stuff or to redo some steps.. to make him more a realistic character ..
but it has to do for now .. my application has to be send away...
its a university .. so it doesn't have to be perfect i think i still have alot to learn and improve :)) ..

Looks really nice. I cant really see anything to crit. Heh Looks like a reletive of Hiachi Mashima from Teken hehe.

hehe.. a friend of mine already said that he looks like the tekken guy...
anyway, this guy came out of mere chance .. i did not intend to copy that guy.. but as you stated this ones more .. i kindly start to believe i really did +grin+

im doing an application at the moment for a univerity .. i wanted to do some more renders but i'm afraid i won't find the time for that..
