Hi! This is my first FXWars challenge! I will be posting some wip soon.
I'll be using FumeFx for the simulation.

The flamethrower I want to achieve will be similar to these videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dmE-emrrAs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT1pNO11bjI

Cheers
Nahuel

Here is my first test I'm posting here.

awesome flames nahuel but i think the fume should be darker

Thanks for your comment Toufik!

In this update, i darkened the smoke:

Here is another update:
http://vimeo.com/13403208

I added side-emitted flames to the flamethrower, just like in the reference, and changed the fire color a little bit.
I will be adding more details soon. :)

This looks pretty good already I agree. The smoke lighting is probably way too high, you should definetly reduce it. Id love to see a more horizontal spitting instead of these up and down movements (I never understood why people do that...well, probably there must be monster spiders at the ceiling :D ) and you could still do some more fire color correction.

Otherwise, good work so far! Looking out for more.

NahuelL
07-17-2010, 01:17 PM
thanks!
Yeah, in the final shot I'll make sure the flamethrower is horizontal :D. And as for the lighting...do you mean the smoke has to be darker?

Katachi
07-17-2010, 01:42 PM
no no, I mean the lighting that comes from the fire should have less influence on the smoke. The smoke lighting itself is fine Id say.

Update: http://vimeo.com/13433913

In this video I added a flame burst when the emission stopped. You can see it at 0:23 of the reference video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dmE-emrrAs
I also reduced the fire lighting influence on the smoke .

Katachi
07-18-2010, 08:55 PM
Looks good. The bursting is indeed an important addition! However, forgive me if I need to bring it up again, but I still think the extent of the fire lighting is still too big. In your posted reference video, check out 0:12 when he starts spitting again. As you can see the influence of the fire lighting is very short. Thats because the fuel does not burn very hot. So I think this would really add to the realism (although one could of course argue that artistically it looks more stylish with a bigger influence width...but well, I am the physical guy here :D ).

Anyway, getting better.

New update: http://vimeo.com/13460547 (it's converting)

In this video I reduced the multiple scattering (fire lighting influence on the smoke).

In the next update, I'll add the ignition flame :)

Here is a before/after image:

In the image it looks already much better now! :)

Thanks guys! :)

Here is a preview of the ignition flame. Unfortunately I couldn't find any close-up reference of it. But this is what I came up with:

Looking already good! Not much to say about it. Maybe the flames are a little bit too crispy otherwise the speed and turbulence is good. Look at the mythbuster reference I posted: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=139&t=897872

The ignition flame can be seen quite good there (I used it myself as reference for my ignition flame, see my thread).

Thanks for that reference Samir!
In this video I changed the fire colors.
In the next update, the flamethrower will be more horizontal and I'll add the ignition flame!

New update: http://vimeo.com/13585837

In this video the flamethrower is more horizontal and it has the ignition flame.
This weekend I'll try to shoot some footage. :)

Wow man, really nice. Are you using FumeFx? if so can you explain a little your process?
are you using a particle source, or just a simple source with really high velocity? what is your grid size and spacing? if particles is it pflow/legacy, or thinking?

Really nice work man, I truly think right now you have the most realistic looking sim out of everyone.

My only worry is that the scale seems maybe a bit off? When you attach it to some footage it may look to small? I don't know it looks like maybe its only shooting 10-15 feet when it should be more like 35-40 Maybe I'm wrong. But really nice sim none the less man. Good Luck.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm using FumeFX with a Particle Src with PFlow particles that have a very high velocity. The Grid size is 150x220x160 and the spacing is 0.5.

That video was rendered a little bit far from the flamethrower, so you would see most of the smoke.
Today I'll shoot the footage for it. :)

Great work so far Nahuel! Looking forward to seeing the final composite but maybe decrease the multiple scaterring just a tad.

NahuelL
07-29-2010, 08:48 PM
Thanks guys!

TD0615VFX: I think the multiple scattering is already looking fine... :)

Here is an image of the matchmoved footage and also you can see a hand-animated cylinder in the flamethrower (still animating it)!
Once the flamethrower tracking is done, I'll merge all the setups and simulate it!

If you can get some of the ambient light from the fire on the surrounding area, this will really come together, good stuff bud!

Here's the flamethrower comped up. I added a fuel pass (not seen in this image), heat distortion and ground illumination. Now I'm simulating the ignition flame and after that, I am going to add some illumination in front of the guy's body.

very nice comp! i really like how to fire illuminates the ground.
