View Full Version : character / vehicle : muppet ---> animal
j00ey 09-22-2003, 05:43 PM hi all
here's an animation i've been working on. just left 3dsmax after many years and learning maya. this was to practice my poly skills, then i thought i should animate it rather than just do a still.
comments appreciated.

ps - how do you upload decent res images when the maximum size is 20K. i've seen loads of images here that are way over. i must be missing something.

hi 3d zaaba
what do mean it's wierd? the plot is a bit thin [!] but then i'm not really a filmmaker. did you watch it with audio? much better that way.

glad someone out there liked it

Nice overall - I was kinda disapointed that he didn't come alive and start whacking the drums in time to the music at the end. Also the point where the camera rotates about the toy it shouldn't all go out of focus i don't think. Nice modeling though!

thanks velk
yes - would be good if he started drumming, but i'm not really a character animator, and it was modelled from a moulded plastic toy. beyond my capabilities that.
i wasn't sure about the motion blurred sequence either. i was trying to do that hugely overused timeslice effect where a ring of cameras fire all at the same time and the shots are then sequenced. so given that he's going fast i thought he should be motion blurred [thanks to jozvex for helping me work out how to do that]. i don't know if it's maya renderer motion blur, or if i got the settings wrong, but to diminish the noise, i was getting render times of 30 mins / frame, so i had to make do. i think renderman or other 3rd party engine would handle this better.
anyway, thanks for the comments.

Hehe cool!
It seems like the motionblur gets stronger at the part where he freezes than when he was moving which is a bit strange....
But it's still cool! How did you do the dizziness/stunned effect?

do you mean the end sequence?
if so i rendered one straight pass, just zooming up to animal, then a couple of rotating curves with a simple pfx brush strokes attached and animated trim [glowed a little in afx] rendered over initial pass as image plane
then using the [non-trimmed] curves as sprite emitters rendered a HW pass of a prerendered rotating head and 5 frame stars gifs.
comped in afx with just a little choking required.
motion blur is a bit strong i agree, i'll have to revisit that sometime. but there isn't any motion blur on any of the other shots - that's just afx frame blending.
thanks again for your help.

Hi Jooey...
I really like the model (with plastic diffuse),
Now you're great for uv displacement/bump map
The animation sequences its ok, except more dynamics works maybe, it would be cool (imho).
And as Jozvex said, with just a bit mo-blur would be good, Maya's 2D blur works fine (more realistic movement) :)

hi deathbrain
i've not tried 2d motion blur, i'll check it out.
i wanted originally to have a couple of the wheels fly off and roll towards camera when the car hit the floor but i didn't get chance to work out how to do that. but you're right, some more dynamics would be good. i'll try the 2d blur thing when i get chance and perhaps edit it into the clip instead of the 3d blur.
