View Full Version : HMC #26 - Frank Frazetta Tribute - Fall of a hero?
asier cubero 07-07-2010, 03:14 PM Well, I'm starting a bit late but I will try to finish in time at least the modelling part.
I have choosen an original interpretation of his art instead of adapting one of his images.
The idea is that a no-longer-dead wizard/sorcerer/magical ugly guy (he is a skeleton at the moment in my mind) summons from another dimension a pack of beast of undetermined look at the moment to defeat the warrior that is being overwhelmed by his enemies. I'm still thinking about the designs but I have more or less an idea for the warrior and sorcerer. If I have time I will add a breaking ground to increase the sensation of danger and maybe a some entacles coming from the abbys.
The summoned creatures will look alike because I will need to save time somehow.
This is the sketch

The light blue headed one is the warrior.

And here the Zbrush sorcerer.

Maybe I will change the way he summons the creatures and they will come out from smoke that appears from his hand. I will decide while I continue working.
The head will be a skull with some bandages flapping like in the arm from the sketch.

New update. I'm working slowly because of profesional duties. I know that working is good and necessary, but in this moment it's time consuming and: AAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH
Well, this is the head at the moment. I'm still working in the texture and there are several areas with different approaches. I haven't decided which one choose, but a mix would be the best. I like the look of fibers in the left one, but extending it to the whole skull would be excessive in my opinion.. I would like some runes carved directly in the bone, but that would require not having so many visual information.

What do you guys like the most? What do you suggest?
By the way, thanks mecos

Here another update. Very similar to the previous one in some details but this is more or less the final look of the sorcerer. There are some things that need to be improved or done, but I must work in other things in order to get a full body, s, if I can, I will polish it adding more details, texture to the bandages and some runes carved in the bone.
I'm afraid next week I will be a hermit to be able to have a decent result.

But now, two questions:
1 How can I choose the size of the image or video I make in zbrush? I want to make it bigger than what I see in the screen, but I don't find the option to render in the size I choose. This is because it's very likely I wont be able to take this to 3d studio max because of lack of time and I see no way to make a 1600x1200 image.
2 Where is the option to deactivate the deformation of closed surfaces but in the other side? like in a tooth.
More to come.

New updates. The sorcerer already has a decent look, but I damn the day I began making holes in his clothes. Now I have to make the insides. Neverending work.

I have the solved the first problem I mentioned before. But now I have other doubts. How can I choose the picot point when making a turntable? It always does whatever it wants. And how can I have all the objects of the subtool equally visible and not all of them darkened but the selected one? Or how can I give them different materials?
This doubts are really important for the presentation of my work, so any help would valuable.

Well, after the lack of time and my need to study much more drawing, I have decided to concentrate in the sorcerer. He will no longer be summoning cretures. I spent two or three days with the creature in zbrush but I didn't get a good result. So, considering I wont be able to do something good enough, I have changed the idea of the image. I don't like having to change it, but there is no other way. Furthermore, I thought the deadline was yesterday. Working until 7 o'clock in the morning to get a decent result for a false alarm. At least I advanced many hours.
Here the result at the moment. There are many more details in his clothes and a ray.

I will add a floor. Maybe the top of a mountain. And continue adding details. Now the name should be somehing like "Taming the nature" or something like that.
No warrior, not very Frazetta. A pitty but there is no other way.

COMMENTS & DESCRIPTION
Here is THE SORCERER. Back from the dead, so willing to have his vengeance that he secretly sold his soul to a thousand demons to achieve ultimate power. If they come to realize they have been fooled, he will have two possible destinies. If he is lucky, his soul will be thrown into oblivion and the nothing will be his sole partner. If he isn't lucky, his soul will be torn apart and tortured by the thousand demons at the sime time. A thousand tortures for all eternity. But no price is to great in order to achieve his so desired vengeance. And he will get it when he gets to bow down The Nature.
Well this is the story of the sorcerer. As you can see if you look at the sketch in the WIP, it was a way bigger diorama. But lack of time made me abandon the idea of making the three characters. Fortunately I began with the one I liked the most.
I didn't make a work based in an image made by Frazetta because I felt more motivated with a work of my own but in his style and themes.
The biggest problem I've had is tat when preparing zbrush for the rendering, I saved and suddenly, memory error. The file has corrupted and the last security copy was from two days ago. But zbrush has failed again And I almost lose that file to. More concretly, I had lost the head, but I had a backup isolated in other file. I have lost the terrain and the last details of the clothes that gave them more irregularity and credibility. At least it survived enough to make a decent final image. Although I'm still far from being a full artist, I think it looks cool enough.
Any comment is welcomed.
By the way, does anyone know how to save any subtool from a file that can't be opened because zbrush gives error and closes before seeing anything? Something like the merge option from 3d studio max. The saving was aborted in some moment before finishing.
