Go away for a weekend and the competition is already in full swing so I guess my dwarf will live up to my name - Tardy Dwarf.
Early idea - half dressed, desperately clutching at papers always late to meetings and never quite there on time. Wait a minute! That's too true to life.....
Will try to get some sketches & a WIP site up as soon as I can sign up a freebie website. (or that wonderful tremendous Doug Horning comes to my rescue...):eek:

thanks for the complements guys! drew him up while having to do other stuff so I'm not fully taken with him yet.
I'll try to post some model-sheet type drawings and maybe that'll give me the spur I need to like him.
Needs more "character" I think first.:hmm:

Oh wow! That is cool and very different. I reeeally dig the totally laid back look of this guy ... it fits his always being tardy thing. He's late and he couldn't give a rats arse. Cool.

you opened my eyes there too, I brought something else into this dwarf that I hadn't originally meant but the character name remains.
Well here's my final version for review. I'd like feedback if possible so that I can now really get cracking.

wow, catch up time!
bad news is I left my AM 8.5 disc at work rendering out. "good" news is I was able to re-install AM9.0 at home and I had the old 9.51e installer somewhere so here's what I managed so far-
simple colour groups - ears are on the way.

I was kind of leaving worrying about the whiskers as long as possible but you're both right guys - though I tried to design them as simple as possible.
I have a feeling I'll go witha combination of geometry & maps with some fur.
haven't had much luck with fur before so I don't want to risk it too much now. The problem will be a toony looking dwarf with realistic hair/fur.
groan........... (should'a given him dreadlock whiskers too!)

I really like the shirt.
and my $.005 on the whiskers thing would be for cookie cutter maps but then again half a penny doesn't go too far.

Sorry, never really had time and most of my sketches and artwork is confidential type work. (sorry, i mean someone pays for my work and it goes into shelves/storage once things are made from it)

only crash I've had was with the CD version of 9.0 (select whole mesh to copy - kaboom, frozen desktop!) I was duplicating the modelled half of the face mesh to flip.
latest stage since then - (still a,long way to go)

at the beginning of today, I had 4 spare hours ahead- woohoo (to quote the Admirable Doug Horning)

Again, I really like the detail you're adding to the clothes. He's coming along great! I like the stylization to the arms but they don't seem long enough right now, or there doesn't seem to be an elbow area. Otherwise, very nice!

This is looking good so far. I agree with Jim in that the arms look a little short. The clothing creases are nice. I still can't do that with much success.

Thanks for the feedback Jim and Zaryin. Here's the mesh so far, greyed him out so I can now see what needs re-modelling or tweaking. Ears added and socks to add final detail.
I'll have a look at the arms but if I may, I did test-rotate the arms so I was happy enough with the length. Tell you what, I'll post a flyround quicktime this afternoon so you can decide for me?

Zaryin - wasn't sure if you where pulling my leg after all the complaints I made about how creasing affects some of my models when modelled in low patch mode.
This guy is about 3700 patches so far - haven't started on mouth details like teeth, gums and tongue yet.
Had a laugh at your question though! You cheered my morning right up.

LOL, no I was serious! I really have trouble getting those "natural" looking creases and fold into clothing and yours looks really good so far.
So far my clothing is basically a bunch of tubes :). I'll be posting an update of mine and you can see my tube clothes so far, haha.

not happy with the look of the choreog in version 9.5 so I'll take the file home and render out in version 8.5

never tried this before but here's the tardy model rotated (http://members.lycos.co.uk/choochoosplace/index.html) so if there's any opinion about the model please let me know?

Please don't change the arms. I love them. Sort of Popeye-ish. Very diff and gives him great character.
Also dig the clothes. Nice rope on the pants. You're catching up to Talbotski. Man, such nice work.

Beautiful model! He looks solid and has great stylization. I really like the socks, kind of a Grinch look to them! Very original feel to him all over.:thumbsup:
My concern about the arms isn't about the look of them, I like the style of them also. I just thought the upper arm looked too short (if the big bulge is meant to be the forearm, and not the elbow area). Right now, he might not be able to do the things you have him doing in your sketches.
After seeing the 360 spin clip, I know why he's tardy...he's got a wedgie slowing him down. ;)
Nice job! I'm looking forward to seeing him textured.

well here's the biceps lengthened. I'm finding it hard to move them out too far as I think it'll look silly too long.

OK, now I have a problem and I need critique help...

Sorry if there's pop-ups - I have somehow placed a table with the two movie options on my index page. Let me know your opinions please.
Movie 1 - shorter arms but more "popeye" forearms..
Movie 2 - longer arms, less popeye forearm mass (if that makes sense?)
Oh yes... Movie 2 - I got some black dots in my .tga sequence..
While you make your mind up, I'm going to start texturing....

I'm going with #2 but have a horrible, horrible feeling I may some point be -retro- translating the 2001 rig if I don't find one that'll run with 8.5.. especially if I want to enter any more competitions

Can't you do your own rig? I mean how hard can it be? Just kidding, but really how intense does the rig have to be for this challenge? Is it just enough to pose it well or does it have to be animation-ready?

I seem to remember we agreed in the rules discussion that the dwarf should have a common rig so in that particular case it was the 2001 rig chosen.
Going to try making sure the dwarf is animation ready..

Still a bit rough at some of the seams - might try small displacement maps for the wrinkles but it REALLY SLOWS THINGS DOWN

first truly MAJOR problem.. patches not showing up when rendering!
seem to have hit a number of image maps problem when trying renders from the modelling window. It could also be that this model is patch heavy simoultaneously (did I spell that right?)
I'm decalling in 8.5
Main modelling done in 9.5 - 3900+ patches
Here's example of this problem - was trying to get the whiskers done. Looked great on my Mac last night but on my Pc -
A REAL DOGS' BREAKFAST! And the targas aren't showing up right now. I'll try in 9.5 and see how that goes.

Zaryin and Modernhorse - yes, I used Decals (such an American word!) I've yet to successfully "blend" out the displacement maps even with alpha channels. Nasty seams at the decal edge.

well, AM has made the decision for me! Always wondered what the patch limit and image mapping limits where in 8.5 and I hit them with Tardy Dwarf..
here's the same file rendered out in 9.5
This also now means the model will only be useable from version 9.0 upwards...
Ah well! sigh!:thumbsdow
now to work on those whiskers a bit more!

HA! Love those socks!!! I think the hair on the hands is a great touch. And I think the overall proportions are wonderful.

LOL - Dog's breakfast was a polite way of saying the render wasn't what I'd expected. It is an English expression for a (scuse me) "pile of steaming crap"
Why'd I use it? I had the file sorted fine, everything unhidden then I pressed render - suddenly whole sections where missing, bits seemed cut away etc etc.
I still have sorting out to do - most of the image maps have translated into colour settings ( I had specularity, transparency etc etc) but 9.5 seems to have re-written them.
I feel like I'm 2 steps on but a whole lotta steps back at same time.
Off now, posting more "progress" tommorrow!

Got my zip drives home, fired up AM and.............
all my image map details had been wiped. Well, I am working with version 9 so my own risk, I knew the dangers of relying on version 9.
Taking a break today to clear the head, breathe some deep breaths and mutter into the wind.
Version 9.51e on both machines - PC at work and Mac at home. If I don't show up again before the dealine - May I take this opportunity to wish all remaining contestants the best of luck!

anyone know why a PC would just sort of "hang?"
does it get clogged up and need clearing out somewhere? I work with Macs mainly buT was given a PC (so's I could learn XSI)
one good side of my problems (just having shut Task Manager down TWICE at the wall switch) is I get a couple hours tommorrow, maybe get a pose done...
Might be able to make one last post tonight. If no luck tommorow or I have to wipe everything - may I say again -

I realy like his body shape! I can imagine the way that he would walk, all loose and floppy. You are doing phenominaly well dispite your evident technical problems.
