I dig it :). Especially love the way you modeled the cloth. It drapes very realistically. I don't know much about Chinese Opera, so I can't really offer you any advice on the look, but it really looks great.
Man that's really something...!
Awesome folds skills... You have one render on your web taht is too great. It's the one of a boy holding a ball... What's the poly count on that?
Amazing!
Please provide us with more info. Prog used, shader type and workflow for your modeling technics!!!
Congrats... Will this get pluged???!!!

thanks for all the kind words guys. i'm really glad you guys dig this peice so far. i got a week off comin up and i plan to try to really sink my teeth into getting it upwrapped and at least partially textured. as you can tell i really do love cloth modeling, i dunno, its kinda zen trying to model something that is so chaotic and complicated, yet so orderly and simple.
anyhow as for your questions
i use 3ds max to model and render. i used photoshop to some resizing and a very slight sharpen and finally add text. outside of what you see is what came out of max. as for the cloth, the 4 flags on the back were simulated using stitch, everything else was hand modeled. the rendering was done with max's scanline, for this project i'm really trying to stay away from high end renderers, gi, and what not and try to go back to the roots if you know what i mean.
as for the shader. its just really simple. i meant it only to be a placeholder for now. its just a standard max material with a falloff map in the diffuse channel where i tweaked its output curves to better adjust the creep of the falloff. this does a reasonable job of catching the rim lighting of cloth, however the clothing still looks too velvety when it should be more satin but i'll get to the shaders after i've painted textures.
anyhow thanks again for all the kind words. oh and here's a wire:
http://www.3dartisan.net/~kuman/wip/operawire_s.jpg
finally if you're really interested in how i modeled the cloth i made a small time lapse vid of myself modeling the sleeves. you can get it here : sleeve modeling time lapse (http://www.3dartisan.net/~kuman/movie/)
thanks again, will post updates as i get to texturing. take it easy.

Great work Kuman! I´m very curious about the texturing. I had the velvet impression in yours first image too, and I liked. But I have to agree that silk make much more sense for that character. Congratulations about your skills to make cloth (zen skills), by the way I´d like to make a obvious question: will You animate him??

note many things are not finalized, face texture, shaders, etc.
also the top spheres that are orange are meant to be furry, i'm still considering an approach to that area.

max at its best if you ask me, you should be proud. Your texturing is turning out good but I agree that the bump is a bit too much. But not toooo much. Great job so far, I'm looking forward to seeing this getting plugged. It's very professonal.

i am absolutely in awe. Seeing your first render i was already aware of the different material textures. Truly amazing and outstanding work. I look forward to the finish product!
One little thing that stands out to me though is the fact that his face is catching so much light compaired to the headdress. Lil shiny nose but not much shine to the more metalic parts.
All the same it's a gorgeous piece and i can't wait to see it completed. Great job!

This is beautiful work. I don't usually fanboy, but this deserves some praise.
What a fantastic model! And I'll have to chime in with the rest in saying the cloth looks amazing. Thanks for sharing the modelling video. It's interesting how you use Extrude Edge to add folds.
I totally aggree with you, modelling folds is very relaxing, lol!
I was wondering if you were thinking of posing this character. The way you model the folds looks great now but when reposed they will be all wrong, not? This made me wonder if it wouldn't have been better to pose first before modelling the folds.

thanks everyone for your kind words
i'll definitely look into your suggestions on reducing the bump and checkin out the eyelids again, though i think tweaking the geometry will have to wait till i'm finished with textures. also the facial texture is really not final. i know its too symetrical, not smudgy enough for face paint and i mean to build far more complex shaders as the yellow areas on the face paint are placeholding for gold paint.
--->wiro - wow thanks for replying to my shizzle. i really hate saying something like this, but it you're one of the guys who really inspire me with your artwork. i'm really honored that you like this model man.
anyhow as for what you mentioned, definitely the static modelled cloth wont be able to flow perfectly after i rig and pose. however i really tried to design it such that it would be reasonable looking as long as i satisfied a few things such as keeping the arms below the shoulder and in a fairly relaxed position. i did some quick prelim tests with rigging and found that it looked reasonable for most poses where the arms weren't raised too high. we'll see what i happens i guess.
- thanks again for your kind words guys. i'll post more updates as i crank em out. take care.

This is truly amazing stuff. A long time since I saw cloth so nicely done, the velvet feel to that original grey render is so good.
I like the fact that your face texture looks so much like paint. And the details around the face! With that eye your model looks more like a wooden sculpture than a living human, is that intended? I'm sorry if I am critisising WIP textures/models.

Hi, Mr. Gu. your work's so wonderful and full of Chinese culture. I could feel it coz' I'm from China too.
here comes my critz:
1.the performer's facial make-up seems ok, but the highlight and the saturation is too much as if that's made of metal powder. So just take a little bit lower value on the highlight and the area.
see the refs:
http://card.7758.com/whys/whys16/lp12.jpg
http://card.7758.com/whys/whys16/lp15.jpg
2.the character's lips are not natural, especially on the corner of the lips, just push the vertexes in.
3.the forehead is not good enough which it seems too plane.
4.I think you could add the beard on the guy.LOL!
well, those are my opinions. I hope that it could help you.
you really did a good job, and just keep going on!

I guess I'll get myself in the line
AWSOME! that is some neat stuff.
I have only one little crit, its way too late for this one but I see it so often I have to remind the 'pro's about it:
the face is too perfect, almost toy-like perfect. to ovoid the tinyest bit of cg-look you should displace the face (and body!, which you have done already) a wee bit, if you look at anyones face and um... delete half of it, clone the remaining half and flip it (I think I've been using ps to much :D ) you will see a completely different person. thats because the eyes/ears/chin are almost always displaced and actually differ if you look hard enough(or compare them). yeah, thats it, other than that - THUMBSUP!

I usually don't post on threads this long where everyone is giving acolades but man you really deserve it. Amazing job all around. I have one question that I hope you could answer.
On the gown and the hat, did you paint those textures from scratch or did you take pictures of some asian fabric of some kind?
Akil
kuman
11-02-2003, 01:24 AM
thank you guys so much again
i really feel re energized to keep pushing on with this wip
once again i hear all your suggestions
blackhorse - thanks so much for those reference pics. they are much better than the once i had. i do plan on almost completely revamping the face in terms of shader and maybe texture. those pics will really help me out.
also i totally know the face is too mirrored right now. i was planning on doing some more distortion after the texturing was done as well as adding more cloth geometry like strips of cloth flowing from the head dress and clothing.
i know i have to fix those orange balls, gotta make them furry and i do wanna do a beard too, i'm workin on a hair solution. gotta think about that one some more.
oh yeah and everything is hand painted in ps with the exception of two textures, the slight bump on the cloth, just a grayscale photo of cloth, and the photo of a cottage i used for his eye's reflectivity. both of those came from 3dtotal texture cd's.
once again thanks so much guys, you do me too much honor.

11-02-2003, 06:37 AM
So beautiful! Have you tried deleting construction history on everything to try to help solve your RAM problem? I keep running out of RAM on my current scene because it's trying to keep reduce/smooth/etc functions in memory on 150k face objects! Not cool. So maybe you've got quite a construction history built up on that. Hopefully it's as simple as that so you don't have to keep restarting :) The character is just awesome.
Are you going to animate it or bind and pose it or is this the pose? It's kind of an odd pose for binding so I was just wonderin.
kuman
11-02-2003, 06:43 AM
oxygen - thanks bro - i painted all those decorations. but i cheated. i painted a hi res version and then copied and pasted a lot in photoshop in my uv layout. however the source i did paint myself. its really quite simple really, its all just black and white masks that i use to separate the two shaders, the blue of the cloth and the gold of decorations. most of the cloth is a composite shader of the blue and the gold separated by black and white masks i painted. thanks for your kind words again.
white rabbit - i use max, i'm not sure how to clear the construction history. can you help me by telling me? anyhow i was on the discreet web boards and reading a bit. i found a few good tips to clear things up a bit. however i fear that no matter what it'll be always scraping by to get this render. as for rigging absolutely i plan to rig and pose as well as do some more interesting facial expressions. but one day at a time ;). thanks again man.

Is there some sort of preset for cloth that you use in max to get your basic settings for the shading?

I think the Max equivalent is collapsing the stack. Of course, I haven't used Max in awhile, and never got too far under the hood, but I was under the impression that all the history that Max saved was in the modifier stack.
By the way, amazing work. How long you been doing CG, how long did it take you to make this?

oh, yeah, the middle shot of the character looks great! I am strongly recommand you to make a animation of Chineses Opera. yeah, it sounds great and interesting!

11-02-2003, 07:54 AM
Kuman,
beautiful work. Sorry if this is redundant, I have not read through all the posts, but yes collapsing the stack can help if you have lots of editing in the modifiers (eg you have an edit mesh modifier and did a bunch of sculpting in it but have not collapsed the stack since then).
Also, since I imagine you have many high res textures you should run this code in the listener window:
freeSceneBitmaps()
Just paste that in there and hit enter. This will unload the textures from memory. You can drag that code to the toolbar and make a button also. Run this after each render and you will free memory, otherwise the textures will stay in your memory while you work.
Other than that you should be okay so long as you have a reasonable machine.
Keep up the great work!

wow, an amazing work - all the details and patterns.
i wonder how you have unfold the clothes with all the folding. it must be a heavy uv pushing - or is the work all done with something like relax???
for the performance isssue, try to merge all neccessary objects into a new scene. sometimes max is wasting memory even when the objects are deleted long ago and so lowpoly scenes become as slow and big as highres scenes.

I love your image and just like the rest of the group have nothing but praise for you.
My only opinion is that the hands look too similar, try moving a finger or two so that they look different from each other.
The folds on the arms and legs are okay since they do not come into view of being cloned that much but the hands need a bit of variation in the fingers.
All the best.

One thing I'd fix is the modeling of the hands. The first knuckle on each finger is set too far forward and the bend in the proximal phalange (first finger bone) seems quite severe. I don't know if you set it too low in relation to it's joining of the metacarpal or there is a physical bend in the joint, but it looks painful as is now.
Also, the first knuckle, between the metacarpal and proximal phalange, is set too far forward. It just seems to pop out where the meat of the hand ends. In reality, that knuckle is set back into the hand. In comparison with the rest of the phalanges, the proximal should be quite a bit longer...even in people with short fingers.
Keep updating!

Its a great model and texture job to be sure, but the one thing that hits me are the orange balls on his head. Because they are so orange, they stand out. Thats not really a problem, but when I look at them I see computationally perfect spheres and perfect shading. It mainly seems to be a problem with the larger spheres, the smaller ones don't look so bad.
Its a nitpicky thing, but you've gone this far, might as well start (?) getting nitpicky.

This is a great highly detailed render! I used to watch broadcast of classic Chinese theatre events on Chinese language TV stations. I loved the amazing acrobatic martial art performances. It would be cool if you could pose the actor in an action stance. Cool stuff.

I think that the fingers on his right hand are a little far apart and slightly odd around the nuckle area, but this is a very very fine point. This has to be one of the nicest pieces I've seen on cgtalk. Have you gotten the cgtalk award for this yet?
