hi,
I am a beginner at 3ds max 5, I am trying to texture a simple high poly head model that I have.

I have been having alot of trouble with unwrap UVW modifier, I dont understand how you are supposed to be able to paint a texture from 25+ clusters that make no sense as to which part of the mesh there too, I've tryed planar from different angles, but then I get stretching.

I also try just the uvw modifier but I get horrible stretching on the top of the head and the bottom of the chin.

I am no professional at max, I just wonder what is the preffered technique that most people use? How do most profesionals do it?

Would you reccomend getting a plugin like deep paint or such?

I've searched and searched for tutorials about texturing but I cant seem to find a techniqe that works as well as I hoped they would.

any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Alan

Look at Paul Steed's books.
"Modeling a character in 3ds max"

amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1556228155/qid=1064233560/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4105564-5806559?v=glance&s=books)

There's a filter there that will show
only polys with a selected material ID.
This allows you to separate them from
all the other 24 sets of faces that are
piled on top of one another. You
can work through one at a time and
lay them all out to get an unoverlapped
setup.

Another good tutorial (this one's free), from Waylon Brinck
http://waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html

As far as tools go, Chuggnut's free Unwrap Tools are really helpful, I use them all the time. Script creates a side bar in UVW Unwrap with a slew of great tools.

Texture Layers is a very cool UV plugin, with FFD and spline UVW gizmos. Not free, but well worth it.

UVPaint is a freebie that has an interesting method.
