Title: Snow, concept art.
Name: David Smit
Country: Netherlands
Software: Photoshop

I made this illustration when I was working at W!Games in Amsterdam as a concept artist. It was for their new IP: Mistbound. The first game of the series is out already and the next few should follow soon.
The illustration was made in Photoshop, in about 1,5 days.

a great concept, very well designed, besides the painterly touch is fantastic, no doubt a great job, simple but effective, giving the star to perpestiva that is perfectly fitted.

This caught my eye the other day when you submitted it to the gallery, but I've been so busy that I forgot to come back to it. As others have said, you have a really strong composition in this image, I really love your use of perspective, and the striking use of colour against the monotonous snowy backdrop. I love artwork like this, which is visually simple yet evocative.

Lovely work, plugged.

An inspirational and painterly piece, very nice!! :)

So relieved you're not claiming you did it in your lunchbreak! (yes, I'm jealous of speedpainters ;) ).

Thanks a lot guys! I'm a bit overwhelmed by the awesome response.

Leigh: Thank you so much for putting on top. It sort of feels like I unlocked an achievement (ooohhh thats nerdy) :)
SciFibrow: Thanks! hahaha, no I'm not a very great speedpainter. But don't be too jealous about speedpainters. In my opinion it's not about making as much of the same stuff as possible, but the opposite: making a few things that are refeshing and thought through.
ZuluSplitter: Thanks man!
Chupacabra: Merci monsieur!
abynum: Yeah I definately don't want to swap places with her! haha
Jadedarts: Thanks!
Nekranea: I'm glad you like it!
Irawan: Thanks a lot!
Felideus: Thank you!
FlorentMasurel: we feel it? whoah a mutiple personality giving compliments from all? Thanks a lot you all! ;)
bobtronic: Thank you Matthias!
KaiS: Thanks a lot man! I'm very pleased this many people seem to enjoy it!
SpaceSoldier: Thanks man!
DOGJAUSREILY: Thank you! I can remember that the perspective was quite a challenge when I made it.
jingjingye: Thanks a lot!!

Haha we should make an icon for that, with that satisfying sound that you always get when you unlock one! Oh how I love that sound.

Excellent piece! Love the perspective and atmosphere you set.

Funny story: I was complaining to my project manager the other day that the average level of digital art in the Netherlands is a tad low when compared to neighboring countries. To show there are some real gems out here she showed me a piece of your work that was featured in control magazine! I'm glad she did and thnx man for helping me get some faith back !

Great image, David! I hope W! someday makes a game about a venture into the mist, but for now we will have to do with tons of pictures of people above the mist. :)

Excellent piece! Love the perspective and atmosphere you set.

RicoD: Haha, I'm honored! thanks. There's a lot of good stuff and great guys and girls out there, if you know where to look! :)
Oogst: I'd love to see them go into the mist too. And yeah, a lot of great stuff isn't really on the surface, but it's there alright!
JobLH: Thanks!
SasaMihajlovic: Thank you!
Artmaru: simple can be very effective. Thanks!

Interesting arrangement. There is not only clear to me, what is on the left part of the picture - clouds, mountains or valley?

i have acrophobia. lol wish not to be in this position anytime.
i love the sense of the coldness, loneliness and dizziness this painting implies. the left hand is strangly bent. perhapse it's because of the shadows... . but overraly it's nice. thx for sharing.

congratulations excellent, I liked your job. im learning about the projection of the lights, but I'm new. I would like to visit my gallery and tell me your opinion. still do not quite understand how to manage the tools of the page, the better you leave the league.
I send a greeting and im glad Jhonn.

Lovely art piece, been back to view your painting several times and I get the same reaction of some unresolved space, though.

At first glance, the figure appears to be standing inside an ice crevice, because the “white “ area in front of the figure is almost of the same value as the white mass of snow & ice at the back of the figure thus these two white areas share the same plane. The dark edge in front of the figure’s feet reads as the bottom floor of the ice crevice even more than the edge of the mountain cliff.

The contour line of the cliff’s edge in the upper right corner of the painting does help in creating a sense that the figure is standing on a mountain ledge.

As I follow that contour line down towards the figure ,it loses its conviction as being the edge of a cliff but begins to be read (with the help of the white are- previously mentioned) as the inside contour line that defines the ice crevice. The black flecks can be read as dirt on the surface of the ice crevice, although , you probably intended the black flecks to read as small , shapes seen at some distance down the mountain face.

The addition of the flying bird, attempts to cement the belief that it is a rock cliff that we are starring at and that the figure is standing on. But even that area where the bird is , can be viewed as the inside of the ice crevice. At least, for me, the black flecks and bird aren’t enough to resolve the ambiguity of the space in the painting as to where the figure is standing, ie , on a cliff or inside an ice cervice.
