there's different ways to make electricity; here's few ones;
- with the advanced render module you can apply electricity "fuzz" over texture (so you have to model the electricity lightning)
- i know there's a plug in that let you create eletricity lightning but i can't remember its name (try plugincafe.com) this is still modelling it...
- The thinking particles module may be helpfull as well but then you have more or less to "script" your electric particle flow
- you may also play around with SLA proximal (for instance if the lightning should appear when two meshes come close to each other... i think i saww that somewhere as well...)
if i can remind of anything usefull i'll let you know.
PS: most of the time (in broadcast) electricity lighting is a post effect (after effect for example); if you could describe or show us the scene you're trying to do it would be easier to answer precisely wich technique you have to use
sorry nataz!

Advanced render manual P.52
noise types=>electric noise
If you tweak it enough with the glow effect it can be efficient

Ben Johnson has a plugin called "Bolt" which makes rather neat quick&dirty electric bolts. I've no idea if it works in v8, but if you're on v7 or below it's worth a look.

I never could get Bolt to work in 6, 7, or 8, but others didn't seem to have a problem with it.

do you want the lightning for a still or a movie ?
if it is a still then this is fairly easy as an after effect in photoshop

some of you asked me to be more specific about what I want to use this for. I want to know how to make both a small bolt of lightning (about 1/2m) and a bigger one (about 8m). Both of these would be used in a movie. They would shoot out from a metal object and hit another metal object. Sorry if this description is not very clear.

bobtronic, exactly like that! thank yew so much!!! Bolt is SO downloaded!:applause: Me and the Flying muffin are making a short film, and this bolt effect was very neccesary and lacking. I'll tell the muffin, he doesn't seem to be reading this post much anymore... Thanks again, everyone!!!

Glad you like it. I have to add that the effect in my pic is a
combination of the Bolt plugin, a glow material and scene-
motion blur. I made three different Bolt objects. Here is
