View Full Version : Enchanted Forest - environment/character - GrAnt
GrAnt 05-26-2002, 12:57 PM Hehehehe ok peeeeple. I am back and with a vengeance!!! Muahahahahaha…..ok I’ll stop the pathetic evil laugh. I decided to start again from scratch, not only the challenge but even my profile. I am turning over a new leaf on the cg talk forums (during the enchanted forest challenge too, what a coincidence) This is to the moderators : I created an entire new profile because I chouldnt edit my old one’s nick “chickenflu” so you can delete that bugger if u want. Sorry to cause a waste of space… Well I’ve made a basic concept to show where im heading this time. Its based of some picture that I saw a while ago, cant really remember…everything is blur since the alcohol took over my life :p

The cheesy lens flares represent some faeries that are going to be flying around. Also the branch on the left hand side in the middle will be the base of a fairy town, complete with tall buildings and the lot. ANY crits (or stars  ) would be GREATLY appreciated, also I would love if Leigh could comment on this one cause we’re from the same country and 3dartists are more rare than a dodos bum over here :p Ok enough blabbering here it is…. AAAAAAAH!!!! Formula one is on, go MONTOYA!!!!!! Sorry…

hmm, maybe it's the alcohol, weren't there pics here a second ago?
Anyway, tree is looking nice.. But I really did like your other concept better, the "closed for enchanting" had a real comedic notion and charm to it.
hope everything works out and you come to a decision and don't get hung over :D

This one is looking pretty good. But to be honest (and a little blunt) it seems to me to be less unique than your last idea. I thought the closed off forest concept was awesome. I guess if you make this piece the background and have the locked gate and "closed for enchanting" sign in the foreground with all the fairies stuck out side it should keep the spirit of the first piece.
Keep up the good work bro!

Thanks for the replies!!!
@ Gabe : Thank you for your kind words, your work is excellent!!!
@Zr0-1 : Being blunt is perfect, and you are completely right. my last idea had something special in it. I guess I just got really demotivated after my first renders. But thanks to you and everyone else cheering me on the old concept WILL be incorporated into this one! Thanks bro!
All keep rocking!!! :buttrock: :buttrock:
I'll be back with an update :applause:

Hey The Artist Formerly Known As Chickenflu, this is looking very cool!!! Heheheheh I like your "closed" concept - this is going to ROCK!!!
Your model is looking great so far - what software are you using, though? I don't recognise the interface.
Anyhoo, looking forward to some updates!! And hoping you will finish this time!! Unlike your poor little squirrel...

And as for the 2 star thing - actually that is the work of some little sh!t around here who has been going around here and giving everyone bad ratings :annoyed: .
You deserve more :p I normally don't give people ratings until right at the end, so I can't bring your rating up yet, I'm afraid...
But good luck modelling - hope to see an update soon!!

Nice work Grant.
A few tips for a fellow "Expert" user of Max. As my job is mainly modeling and texturing, I too am a real estate hog with max. Bind a key to Hide the track bar and a key to hide the tick bar. Youll get a whole bunch'a more lines space at the bottom of the screen. Also this may be handy too.
Its a wee file that if you put in your...
x:/3dsmax4/stdplugs/stdscripts/
It will load "Expert" mode automaticly. Damn handy.
Keep it up. You trees shape is looking really nice.

HUmmm....cant attatch a scrpit...here goes anyway.
make a .txt file in the above dir and call it this...
StartInExpertMode!.ms
now inside that file drop in this...

Hey guys!!! I'm still around if anyone noticed me not here :D I have been working on the challenge but there was a little problem with my profile (couldnt post any replies or updates!!) hehehe I was going through CGtalk withdrawl symptoms (starting to twitch at iregular intervals and developing a rather nasty inner thigh rash) Oh no wait.....I'm normally like that :p Just kidding!!! Well here are the updates! Byeeee guys!

you have some nice stuff goin' here, a little suggestion on the fairy is to picture the rib cage beneath, the breasts can't start protruding until you are out of the rib cage, I especially notice a conflict down the middle, the cleavage starts a bit high and runs a bit deep.
keep it up
GrAnt
06-05-2002, 08:39 PM
Thanks adam!
You are completely correct. The breast and rib cage area is a bit wonky. I'm not sure I understand your advice though, could you maybe write a more detailed reply? I need it badly :)

Wow your last 2 works looks amazing ! I like alot this concept and the render of the pixies is awesome ! HDRI for this one no ?
I wish you good luck, and i wait to see that textured ! :)
GrAnt
06-06-2002, 06:15 PM
Upppdaaaaaaaaaate!! :) Why thank you strike! Yes it is indeed an HDR image :applause:
Well here is the update, that little sign is the one thats going to say "Enchanted forest closed, currently being enchanted" I still plan to add DOF and do textures, ugghhhhh I will need all your guys (and girls- particularly leigh's ;) ) help in that department...byeeee

Hey Grant :p
I just wanted to comment about the wall - everything is coming along nicely, but the one big problem with it is that it's very obvious that those branches peeping over the walls are repeated...
Apart from that though, it's looking cool :)
Maybe you could make the fence a little less uniform? Like a missing plank here and there, or some cracked planks, or ones of uneven length... just a thought :)
That lighting ummmm... just isn't working  If you are going to place lights slap bang in the middle of your scene, be sure to model lighting fixtures to go with them.....
Also, that grass is too uniform. Make it more random (the length and bending)
levin
06-07-2002, 01:41 PM
the grass looks so unnaturally cloned and evenly spaced.
making it more randomized in all aspects might help
GrAnt
06-07-2002, 06:42 PM
Heeey
Thanks for the replies!!!!
@ Leigh : I will definitely make the wall more broken up like you suggested and the repeated branches will also go! hehehe as for the lighting, my final image will look noooooooothing like that, it was just some very strange lighting produced by hdr maps :) I will also randomise the grass completely as you and levin mentioned :) Thanks for the help!!!
Here are some images of the beginning of texturing :

:buttrock: nice texture ,I like it but add some bump map to the bricks and the other door would have another stairs or is it a window ??
I think the base of the bulding need another texture ??
keep going u have a great forest;)
Adam Klein
06-07-2002, 09:31 PM
The village looks great, nice texture style, yes a little bump would make some of the detail stand out better, but VERY nice!
about the fairies, uhm... a better way to say it maybe...
the cleavage starts a bit too high, and it runs too deep as if it starts BELOW (depth) where the ribcage should be, so by giving it less depth, should solve that, I'm sure you could find some references around
great stuff, keep it up!
GrAnt
06-07-2002, 09:58 PM
Thanks for the replies guys! ummm the bump on the brick is @%@^@#%&% high, but I will try and make it even hiiigher and see what happens
@ Adam : I think I get what you are saying....I was having a look at the hand's challenge and his breasts are brilliant
Thanks guys! :)
