View Full Version : Environment: A grassy field
Waters 09-21-2003, 09:33 AM This is just a test render project I have fiddled with the past two-three days, I'm thinking about taking one of the models I have been working on and placing it in this environment. But, I just wanted some feedback on this test render, so let me know what you think about it.

doesn't look bad, but the clouds go too low into the horizion and looks somewhat unnatural. either that or you are looking up a hill, but then the landscape doesn't fit that so. maybe change one or the other :)

Yes the sky is the only thing I see wrong also...
For the time off day there should be a haze or fog in the lower atmosphere...
Other than that.....looks good.

Thanks for the responses guys.
link84 - I cannot increase the scraggle, because the grass was not made using fur or hair. The grass is all geometry, I am using maya and mentalray. I think I have managed to make the grass look more random though.
I changed the sky and the shaders, does this new one look better or worse?

Is your ground object just green now? If it is I think you should try giving it a grass texture, maybe make a patch with tighter packed geometry and render it from the top, and use that as a tile. Right now it looks good at a glance, but if you look closely you can see that the grass is pretty sparse. I like it so far, it's tough to make nice grass. How many polies in the scene now? and how many per grass blade?

the sky looks better now with the falloff, it gives it more depth. my next concern is how you are going to deal with the lighting, that far shadow on the boxes doesn't look right. the lighting overall doesn't look right, if its daylight it needs to be a lot brighter or have a more overhead source

I prefer the first sky, might just have needed some work, and I think the lightning was more realistic. It really had a feeling of depth, unlike the second one. Now it looks greener than a golf course, it looks errr 3D green I would call it, but the first one was not quite right either. I would also put more grass, it looks like tiny crops. Show us your progress:)

great comments, thanks.
Hatey - I agree with your suggestion, I have placed the main light at a higher angle, and increased its intensity. I'm working on the lighting..
Osirus- I'll try doing another render with the original sky, and see what I think. I certainly is too green, I have been playing with the shader, I was trying to not make the grass look too dead, but ended up with an alien-like green grass. I think I have gotten it right now though.
E.Z. Schwartz- I agree about the ground plane looking flat in that render, but I wanted to stay away from using any picture based textures because I dont like the pattern the results, it looks very unnatural. I gave the ground some variation in color and intensity, I think it looks better. Also, for some reason in these past renders the ground wasn't picking up shadows, which makes it stand out.. and look more flat. I'll post the poly-stats tomorrow for you.
I made a lot of the modifications everyone suggested, then half way through the render MentalRay/Maya gave me a runtime error and crashed. I cant spend anymore time on this tonight, but I promise to have an updated render tomorrow.

Grass looks way better now.. But how did you create it? Scatter or something?
Keep up the good work.. Are you gonna do something with all those boxes? :p

Yeah the grass looks superb.
Though IMO it is a bit too random, like a tornado has just passed over it, or like my hear when I wake up.
Other than that, it looks great:thumbsup:

Straightmark- Thanks for the comment, those boxes are just there now for me to get a better idea of how my lighting looks. I like the look of the grass for now, and the lighting, so I will now move on to modeling some objects for this scene. For some reason I was thinking of an old broken down plane in a field while I was making the grass, so perhaps I will model an aged aircraft for this environment.
FeRdI - Thankyou. Earlier in the thread someone had told me that the grass looked too uniform, like rows in a crop field, so I made the grass more random. I guess it is too random, I'll have to try to find the happy medium between the two.
:wavey:
Ill keep posting, so keep the crits and comments coming.

Looks like around 1,000,000 :surprised verts for all those blades of grass, the sky dome, and the ground. All of the grass is geometry, no maya fur was used. The scene was rendered with Mental Ray, lit with the sky dome ( final gathering ) and a single light.

I like it, th egrass color is good. I just think the sky is too dirty/grayish. Keep it up:)

Hatey- I am glad that I have your approval : ) ... thanks for your comments earlier regarding the lighting, your advice was good advice and I like how this environment now looks.
Phil - I think I got the grass color right this time as well. If you dont think the sky is finished yet, I am more than happy to play around with it some more until I do get it right. I'll try going back to the sky I originally had like you said earlier, and I also see what I can do with my current sky texture to make it less dirty and grey. Thanks.
