How important it really is to click on the "Planar Map" button prior to doing "Mapping/Normal Mapping/Box Mapping"?
I have tried without it, and I just don't see a difference.

Do you mean prior to doing the automatic mapping options available in the Edit UVWs menu?

As far as I can see, there's no link whatsoever, they're just different tools for applying UVs.
