View Full Version : HMC #26 Frazetta Tribute - Girl riding a horse (drawing)
mancubus 06-28-2010, 10:24 PM Hi,
That would be my first HMC. But when I saw thats the Frazetta tribute I just needed to join in.
There is so many great artwork to choose from, I saw that most of my faveourites are allready choosen. Most of the people choose work based on his paintings, so I will try a bit different aproach - I found quite a few sketches, with girls riding a horses, but not so many paintings.
I will try to recreate this scene :

I found many other sketches and paintings of the horses and frazetta style women, so it will be great practice of anatomy sculpting.
Human and horse anatomy, got a lot to learn - should be fun thou.

Time for the first update, instead of starting scultpting in zbrush straight away, I will spend some time on the base mesh first. Thats perfect oportunity to make good base mesh for later use in other projects.
I'm working on the head now, trying to get the loops right, got plenty of refs with good topology, it just take some time to create nice flow.
Meantime got the base body done, trying to get the proportions and loops right.
I got my reference to catch all the curves and proportions. Obviously the girl on the horse will have more frazetta shapes :) - wider hips, bigger breasts etc.
Time to get back to work on the head, before I add any more details to the body.

Thanks guys and good luck to you, defenetely it will be fun challenge.
Got head done, now its time to get back to work on the body, got bit oldschool I guess, to work on the basemesh, when everyone is just sculpting in zbrush. There is enough time to spend, getting the basemesh right, so I will work on it some more before switching to zbrush.

I don't think making a solid base mesh isn't totally considered an old way of working yet. I spent the first day working exclusively on my base mesh in 3dsmax before even going near zbrush. I just hate the topology I get otherwise.

Time for some updates.
I tweaked the basemesh some more and worked on the head. I made the UVs and I'm ready to pose and start sculpting the girl. I havent started working on the horse, because I spend whole weekend working on the textures and light setup.
I know that it is modeling challange, but I had an idea about bringing the sketch to life, and render it out realistic way. I got the UVs allready done for displacement maps so why not use them and create all other maps. Plus working on textures and shaders is quite fun. especially when you try to get SSS working nicely.
And I can use base textured woman model for other further projects.
Not so sure how the sculpted hair will work out with texture applied, but I will think about it at the very last moment.
There is still plenty of time, so this week I will start working on the base horse, and pose the characters

hi there,
Great and solid start. thanks for sharing your process, it's very informative to see. I'm very curious to see how you would bring the b/w sketch to life in color.
Just read what you wrote in the last post and have a few related questions for you.
since you've already uved your character, what happens if your sculpting and posing deform/stretch the base mesh? and are you rendering with mental ray in maya? would you mind to share some insight on how you would set up your sss shader later?

Nice work so far on this base mesh, it's interesting to see how you'll bring this drawing to 3D.

Solid base and nice UV's!
I'd make her cheekbones (face) a bit more prominent and give her some more butt. ;)
Cheers!
