View Full Version : HMC #26 - Frank Frazetta Tribute - Night Winds.
Hi
So I spent the whole night looking through FF's work and decided on this one, its not as dynamic as some of the other but I really like it. Almost went with "Fighting man of mars"..hope some one tries that one.

I will do the lady, man and the tree stump/rocks shes hiding behind. Dont think I'll have time for the horse. I will have to work out a way to make the swamp her legs are in work in 3d also, since we cant use shaders it should be challenging to make it look like swampy water and not just her legs sticking out of the ground..

sweet! Yeah, horse is probably not necessary. Even the lady/water/tree should be enough to create an interesting composition. And I love her expression. Can't wait!

congrats on your win last month, looking forward to good stuff!
d8D: Thx, I really want to nail the expression :)
TheRazorsEdge: thx, Could you give me some more info on "Kane"?
Is he the guy in the image... I'd love to get some more ref images esp of his helmet, armor etc.
Dare-o: cheers :) The octopus was a real pain to manage!
TheArchDuke: Yep, really hard choice! This image has it all when it comes to a 2d painting, hope I can pull of the transion to 3d.
ryankittleson: Thx, I'm already having more fun with this one then the last :)
Ok time to post my start.

So the first image is just transition from zsphere, rough blocking sculpt to re topo and poly modeling in XSI. Next image is where I'm at, the guy was started this evening from the female base and is still very WIP. The lady is getting closer and I think another session and I'll be ready to pose and continue..
I was doing some reading on FrankF's style, some interviews and such and I really like how he mentioned that he would break anatomy rules to give his heroes body types that appeal to him - stuff like very full thigh, butt, belly but thin athletic arms, neck and even ribs showing, which mostly wouldnt happen in real life if the person has a overall petite body type. Also the males seem to have athletic proportions and silhouette but are as ripped as a bodybuilder..He would also mix various nationality features in his faces also - often very doll/exotic looking.
Will do my best to try and capture some of these characteristics...Or maybe I'm reading too much into it :P
Cheers

I'll have to search for that. I noticed every now and then how something wouldn't look quite right :D but I can see how it makes the image more dynamic. I also like the mixing of races. There are quite a few images where he has painted an African woman with a huge shock of blond hair. Very good effect.

Yep, that's Kane. He's a somewhat peculiar character in that he's no regular hero at all and does not fit the general main character themes of the time. He was created by author Karl Edward Wagner, who supposedly looked and lived hard and partied like a biker, so I think its a safe bet Kane was his fantasy self. Kane is loosely based on the Biblical Cain, but lives in a fantasy world using modern speech patters etc. The stories are very dark in tone and Kane is more of an anithero spreading mayhem and horror etc. Visually you can probably think of him as a stereotypical viking who's main occupation is slaughtering mercilessly, raping, pillaging etc. As a reader you might have quite some difficulty deciding on whether you want him to go on living or just get hideously slaughtered himself.
Just like with Conan, you'll probably have a hard time finding him wearing the same outfit in other images. Try searching amazon or google for book covers. The movie "Pathfinder" starring Karl Urban might be an interesting inspiration in overall tone etc in regards to the depiction of the vikings.

I think that is exactly what made Frazetta so great. He knew the rules very well and only because of that could bend them effectively to make things read the way he wanted them to. Copying a photo/reality is one thing, giving something a spark of life through one's own creativity and inspire the imagination of other people quite another and Frazetta was an absolute master of creating very powerful images and visual representations of fantasy characters.
Cheers!
PS: I'd angle those clavicles at least down to horizontal or even slightly below on the female. That is unless you want her shoulders to look "shrugged". In a relaxed state, female shoulders tend to be angled more downwards.

Interesting proportions you've got there, nice weight to the tissue and overall form as well.
