View Full Version : HMC #26 - Frank Frazetta Tribute - John Carter of Mars
razorbjc 06-27-2010, 02:44 AM Not the most dynamic of Frazetta's paintings, but I always liked it. I had it saved to my hard drive a few months ago when I found out Andrew Stanton was directing a movie based on this series.
I will try to create an exact replica of this painting. I have been studying anatomy lately, so now I can put my new knowledge to use. modeling those creatures will also be fun.

recently learned to how to use zspheres, so let's put it to use. For whatever reason, I have decided to pose my model first and then sculpt in the details. I usually develop characters symmetrically, but I've got a lot to learn about anatomy so l might as well sculpt all the muscles twice.

Great someone is doing this one!
Nice start on the ZSphere mesh. Personally, I'd add facial detail and fingers to it.
Looking forward to more of your progress.
Cheers!

Since this model won't be animated posing it first is a good step. This way you can get the model in position without having to worry about how transposing it later will screw up your sculpting. Very good start though. Now you just need to decide when you're going to retopo.

you're right i should retopologize before i get too far. I'll do that now. Here is what i've modeled so far. any thoughts on the posing/balance?
not sure if i should retopologize with individual fingers and then rotate them to clasp the sword or just leave the hands as boxes and model fists out of them.

So after retopologizing, which took a billion years (I learned topogun while I was at it), I got to modeling the face. The cheek bones and brows are really exaggerated to match the face in the painting. I think its pretty good for the most part, but I can't help thinking I could be doing better in terms of anatomy and giving the face life. Maybe add an expression? any ideas?

cool..
forehead should be bit smaller and eye pits deeper, try to put his hair closer to his eyes ..his not that bold..and for facial expressions and generally for real life references for this challenge, just type "mafia suspect" on Google.. : ) or look for Abraham Lincoln photos, he had some huge cheekbones ..

thanks for the crits, I think my head is coming along now. I'm gonna add the long hair later. I continued modeling the body, but its hard to find references of that muscular upraised arm. Also, I'm not gonna touch the left arm til I put in the girl.
I also blocked in some of the bondage gear that the dude wearing

here is another update. This guy is seriously taking me forever. Oh well, I just got to get the straps, boots, and hair right and I'll be moving on to the girl. Any final thoughts on the anatomy and face? I did thicken the eyelids a bit and i think its definitely an improvement.

Yup, eyes are definitely looking better. The guy in the painting doesn't really have defined abdominal muscles, because the ribcage is supposed to be stretching the stomach. Trapezius is a little flat looking. Maybe a little more definition for the biceps femoris. Other than that it is looking pretty good.

back from SIGGRAPH. Now to get this thing done before next week! The man is almost there. Just a few more tweaks on the boots, sword, and belt. Any suggestions before i wrap this guy up?

Sword should curve more. Arm should not "break to the left" in front view (it looks like he is slightly over stretching it). Anatomy in painting seems slightly more exaggerated than in model (waist to chest width ratio, joints more visible despite large muscles, etc...)
Really good work, though :-)
