Greetings folks

Finally i found Painter forum in the net .... i'm a Photoshop artist uses most of my experince in coloring comics .... many advised me to try Painter for his realistic paint

well as most of new users i hated myself when dealing with this program for it's complexity ... so i need some points from experinced people in Painter if they could help me .... i'll post some questions & i hope somebody answer :

1- If u have a brushes made by somebody ... & he gave u the brushes to use them in your artwork ... how can u load them into u r program ... for example a special Blender ... i have it's file ( .amx or something like this ) how can i load it into my program &
use it

2- is there any Tutorials for how to paint line arts ? ... well if i have a characte & i want to color ..... do u make layers & work every color in separate as in Photoshop or all colors have to be painted in single layer & start blending

3- Is it best to work with simple lines artwork ( Pencil for example) ... or it's ok to paint an Inked artwork ?

i'm still experincing the program .... i'll post some other questions if somebody kindly answers me.

I'm using Painter 6

With Thnx

Greetings Jarah,

In the case of your custom brush, if you are using Painter 6, then the brush file will need to be in either the Mac or PC (.brs) format.

Unfortunately, if the brush is a '.xml' file, then you will need either Painter 7 or 8 to open it. There is no way to import/load a '.xml' file into Painter 6, although you can import a Painter 6 brush library into Painter 7/8.

It may be possible to convert the '.xml' brush file to Painter 6 format, but you will need to find someone who has both Painter 6 and 7/8 on their computer. This is a very time consuming process, as each brush parameter has to be manually entered into the Painter 6 brush controls section. Even then, P7/8 brushes in either the liquid ink or water color categories can not be reproduced in P6, as the brush engine is different.

Re. the coloring tutorials, below are a few which cover inking and coloring. The third link covers Painter 6 specifically;

OK, the answer to that depends on the format the brushes are in. If you have a complete brush library then you can use the 'Load Library' option from the bottom of the left hand drop down menu in the P7 brushes palette. First though;

a) the brush library needs to be in Painter 7 format (with the corresponding .xml files).

b) the brush library needs to reside directly at the top level of your Painter 7 'Brushes' folder.

Note that it is possible to import older P6 and below libraries into your P7 brushes folder using the 'Import' button in the 'Load Library' dialogue. This will automatically convert the older brush library format in P7 format.

As an example, for a single brush category library I will call the library 'Jarah's Brushes' and the custom brush category 'Blenders', and the brush variant file 'Blender1.xml' The folder/ file hierarchy will look like this;

Painter 7 (application folder)
>Brushes (folder)
>>Jarah's Brushes (Brush library folder)
>>>Blenders.jpg (a 30x 30 pixel brush category icon)
>>>Blenders (brush category folder)
>>>>Blender1.xml (custom brush variant file)

Note; if the above variant (Blender1.xml) is a captured dab type, then there will also be a file named 'Blender1.jpg' in the brush category folder.

If you have been given a brush variant '.xml' file, then you have two choices;

a) to make your own brush library for the variant by creating and naming the folders as above using names of your choice (note that the brush category .jpg icon needs to be exactly 30 x 30 pixels and named the same as the brush category folder except with a '.jpg' file extension.

b) to add the '.xml' brush variant to an existing brush category (with existing .xml files). I recommend that you do not add custom variants to the default 'Painter Brushes' library, as this already contains a lot of variants, and the library could become bloated.

Hi Jarah,

If you put all the custom xml files in a folder and zip them, you can e-mail me the brushes as an attachment. I will see if I can make libraries from them and e-mail back to you.

Here is my e-mail address;
