After that super fun challenge last month, I couldn't resist doing it again!

Gotta love that healthy figure of hers. ;)
This was amongst the choices I was considering as well, but since you already picked it, you made my list of choices and my headache smaller. lol

Looking forward to your wip images.

Cheers!

I was seriously considering this one. I love the action in this painting, so dynamic. Frazetta's anatomy work really shines.

Here's my start. Base mesh blocked out super quick n' dirty in Maya. Usually I like to model it real purdy in maya straight up, but considering the fleshy goodness of the subject, I'm gonna do the whole sculpt > retop route.

This is about 3 hours of sculpting in zbrush:

thanks, and stay tuned!

About 4 hours into the bull. I decided to model him straight up in maya because retoping the girl reminded me how much I hate retopping. From here it's zbrush time!

Here's about a full day of zbrushing. Having a little internal debate about the hair. He should have a little on his head, hump, ankles, tail and junk. I sculpted some on his tail and it's ok... I'd like to avoid going maya fur, but I will if I have to. Any suggestions?

Got some more done on the girl. Old pics of Bettie Page really came in handy! It's very much a work in progress. Only about half done with the posing and mid range structure. C and C welcome. Oh yeah, also here's the retopology result, too.

I really like your bull. It looks like it might be a steer in the painting though. ;)

The position that the dancer is in seems to be something like a Retiré devant or Retiré position. I don't know too much about ballet but the foot would probably be placed on the knee for the kind of position that the dancer is in.

That should help bring the weight of the body forward a little because she is bending pretty far back right now.

Hope that helps.

GerR: LOL! Castration accomplished. I figured that the balls in the painting were probably just flopping up and out of sight and I forgot all about the whole snip-snip thing! Also, on the dancer's pose...I initially thought the same, but the more I studied the pose, the more I figure that the back has to be arching back in the painting. The contraction of the muscles and the apparent shortening of the back indicate, to me anyway, that the back is arching and we just can't see it from this angle. Also, I could get the foot on the knee, but not in a way that looked as interesting as a pose and not in a way that matched the painting. I really wanted it on the knee, too, since that's the way it initially appears, but after lots of attempts at posing this have convinced me that it is illusion and the foot is really out in front of the knee. If you can convince me otherwise, I'm all ears!

I with GerR on the position of the foot. I did a little bit of analysis on the painting and here's what I came up with
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4772831697_06ca64f70f_b.jpg

The girl in the scene is very top-lit, and as a result of that, for the butt to be casting shadow on her lower leg, it's got to be almost right underneath it. Of course, you could make the case that it's more of her thigh casting the shadow, but I think what really makes the case for the foot to be up on the knee is the lack of any reflected light on her lower leg. It's entirely in shadow. If she were standing as you have her posed, there'd be that blue bounce light wrapping around the form. Either way, your model is looking great, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the end result!

GerR and JerrodSimpson: I humbly accept your analysis  I set up some lights in Maya to test it out. Got the light falling correctly across the back, butt, leg, etc... and the only way that I could get the light to hit on the right heel was with the foot on the knee. Otherwise, the heel stays in shadow. Frazetta did cheat one thing, however  , the right arm should be casting quite the harsh shadow on the right thigh!

*sigh* back to the drawing board on that leg. the hard thing is getting the right knee that high up in the air and still be able to reach the left knee with the right foot.

Did lots of overall tweaking on the dancer, got a start on her hair. got a decent amount of posing done on the bull, still some refinements to be made. I'm planning on making the girl's face similar the face in the baroque sculpture by Bernini "The ecstasy of st. teresa".

The stomach of the bull (its waist I guess) seems to be too big. It's too large compared to the chest. The hump on the back of the bull should also be over the shoulders. It lines up directly with the position of the shoulder blade. Hooves also seem a little small.

The dancer's arms look like they are too far forward compared to the painting. Compared to the size of the body they might be too long in this position. Hard to be sure from the angle of the shot you posted though. Scapula should stick out farther at the inferior angle and along the vertebral border. It's too convex at the moment between the top of the shoulder and the bottom of the scapula.

Hope that helps. It's coming along nicely.

The dancer is looking a lot better now and the bull looks awesome. :)

Castration accomplished.
Gotta be the best line of the whole challenge. :D

The Dancer is looking much better. Her curvy shape is really showing well now.

Very nice sculpting, i can be wrong about this, but...the woman faces in Frazetta´s style, aren´t more in the opposite direction (in terms of personality) from what you are showing here?...

Anyway, great sculpting so far.

Cheers!

JM-art: you're totally right. I started the face based off my fiancee because I could get really good reference of her. now that I have a foundation going, I'm going to push it in a more exotic direction. Thanks for the comments and crits!
