by far the best I have ever seen you do.

Yep looks good, here's a couple things I noticed. The ceiling texture needs to be tightened up a bit, it looks too, I dunno, bitmappy, or something. Also, the entire scene is too sterile. That is one seriously clean kitchen. Where is all that light coming from, it looks a bit overlit at the moment. Still, I think you've done a fine job here. Nice modeling. -- 3d_e

thanks JIII... this was for a 'side by side' challenge. I like how it ended up...

thanks mouse! One question... what on earth does GJ mean?

JIII

it means god and jesus, he is really very religious you see. Its just that he wants to conserve electricity and all so he won't spell it all the way out.

it was to mean GOOD JOB!!!!

"GJ"..... very appropriate reply for a Rev!!!! (I had a good laugh on that one!)

Thanks 3D_e... I agree with the textures... they all need a bit of work. The over-lit problem is because I was supposed to duplicate a scene 'exactly as posted'... and the HUGE highlight on the right is because of the camera's flash.

Now that the challenge is over I may change the lighting, colors and overall textures (black, white, grey kitchen with underlit cabinets...)

it's a good start, but I have a few crits to make. Many of your objects, e.g. cupboards lack edge beveling. This is one reason the scene seems a bit lifeless - there are few objects catching highlights. The places where the ceiling meets the floor and roof should have some sort of cornice, even if it is very subtle. The dark shadow on the fridge looks like a phong problem to me, as it looks like you have hand bevelled surfaces rather than use a nurbs cage - thus you will probably have to reduce the phong shading angle.

Mostly the lighting is letting you down, being very unnatural. Adding a strong source from outside coming through your window with a bluish tint, while filling the interior with a slightly orange tint will achieve more realism. Try to place the interior light sources naturally, as it will be obvious is the scene is being filled by an omni light at an odd height etc.

I would like to see this with new lighting too, something a bit warmer and less direct, and yeah maybe a few extra details, like 3D_e said it is pretty clean.

Yes, a GJ indeed!

Since you asked for feedback:

Someone said something about edge bevels. Yup, that makes a huge difference most of the time. You have some probs with that here, mostly on the outer edges of the cupboard doors and their inner "carvings".

The ceiling texture is too low-res and/or not scaled correctly.

You could also doublecheck the angle in your phong tags - it looks like it's set too high on the fridge door and the windowframe in particular. There's some strange curvature look there.

Overall the textures would benefit a lot if the specularity was broken up some more. Just throw some grayscale grungemaps in the specular color channel and set it to 'multiply'.

nicely done, but indeed, add a little bevel to it, it would take the flatness out of the picture for a dramatic increase in quality!
Very nice work!

Thanks guys! Good feedback.

I'll work on the lighting, textures and bevels at some point today.

I had no idea you could change the 'phong' angle! I'll check that one out today also.

One question though...

If I take a simple cube (say, the cupboard doors for example), pick and edge and bevel it, it results in 2 hard edges instead of a soft rounded one... do I need to keep beveling it to create a nice rounded edge instead of a 'stepped' one or is there a simpler way to do this?

Nice job Rev. The only thing that looks off to me is the millwork on the cabinets. It looks like a straight extrude where you'd expect some kind of bead/moulding between the panels. The best way to do that, IMO, is to create a spline from the edge points and sweep a profile along it.

Regarding your bevel question, it depends on how big the bevel will be in the final image. If it's not going to be very big you can get away with a single bevel. IOW, can you see the hard edges?

I wish my kitchen would be so clean :) Nice work Rev.
All my crits are mentioned in the above posts.

awright! so it IS looking better!
cool!

Here's an innocent question...
I am well aware that grime, grunge maps, water damage, counter glass marks, etc would increase realism...

then again, for interior decorating or architectural visualizations, don't the clients prefer REALLY clean models? (I remember reading something about that some time ago in the postforum)

what do you think? Ultra clean or bring in the muddy footprints (or some happy medium)

Do i see a client here abouts?

hmm hmm hmm no in fact I don't see one

and yes that was adam T who mentioned that in commerical renders its best to keep things clean.

you've made some great improvements.

re: commercial visualisation - this is unfortunately my main area of employment, and yes, the clients usually require pristine surfaces (for stills, run a highlight pass with small flares for that over sheen'd effect). You can add interest with caustics and props such as interesting art works, however.

Heh, yes they do like the homey touches like fridge magnets. Basically they want something that looks lived in, but like the house keeper just walked out the front door. :)

You could add a great looking touch if you'd leave two half-filled coffee cups somewhere on the bench, with some subtle steam rising... Maybe a rolled-up morningpaper next to them.

There's an idea!

2 steamy coffee mugs with a newspaper coming up....

o yes... and a fridge magnet.

Yes, it really does look much better. Can't wait to see the "lived in" version. -- 3d_e
