View Full Version : Environment: Elemental
Virum 09-19-2003, 10:25 PM Hi all!
I wasn't sure what category to put this in so sorry if its misleading. :(
Anyway:

I made it without the text for a magazine cover contest featuring the elements but I didn't win unfortunately.
Anyway all comments are welcome, even critisicm. I'm not looking for the "Dude, you 0wn  " stuff (although that would be cool), just feedback. :) I consider it a finished work since I won't be doing any work on it, but I'd still like to learn from it.
Made in Photoshop 7. Picture of the earth courtesy of NASA (IIRC).

I'm not sure what you're trying to convey, or what magazine it's for so it's hard to say much. As far as composition my eye goes straight to the center and gets stuck. Perhaps if the earth wasn't quite so centered, and the blurs around it not so symetrical. Look around at a good photographers work, the subject is almost never dead center. The only other crit is possibly to have the "Elemental" text be more readable. I congratulate you on the cool lighting effect though. Sorry if this seems kinda harsh, it's just what I would expect someone to tell me.

I'm sorry, forgot to say that the theme of the magazine was to just portray any of the elements: earth, air, fire, water. I was trying to create a sense of movement towards the center of the pic. :)
Don't apologize, I want your feedback. Thanks for the comments. :) More are appreciated of course. ;)

I've got some things to say. I know they'll probably sound harsh, but please don't hold that against me ;)
Anyway, here we go:
I'm not surprised you've lost. The effects are too standard. I could recreate this in a few hours, a day max.
Look around the web. There is a lot more you can do with Photoshop then create noise, radial blur and difference clouds.
Practice and experiments make perfect :)

Don't worry about sounding harsh. I was a newbie at PS and I still am (and I made this 6 months ago). Thanks for the advice.

Don't worry about sounding harsh? Heh. Most people I know would throw a hissy fit I'd say to them what I've said ;)
Anyway, no problem for the advice :)

What element were you going for?
