Hi,

I am curious to whether anyone has heard about Laguna College of Art and Design. I am interested in becoming a digital character animator and I know Ringling is the best but I would like to have thoughts on LCAD. I know the program is only 4 years old or so but the course list looks similar for the high end digital animation schools. Also, I hear they bring in people from the industry to teach students so they're ready when they graduate.

2010 Video Reel : http://vimeo.com/12090001
Animation Courses : http://www.lagunacollege.edu/viewcourses.php?dept=AN

I'm currently taking a 3D Animation course at Santa Monica College just so I can be a few steps ahead of everyone else. I am highly considering LCAD in the Fall 2010. Are there any thoughts from digital animators in the industry or people who've attended Ringling or are attending Ringling? Thanks for responses.

School looks decent and the reel looks decent. Best way to check on a school is to find recent grads. Most will have websites, Google is your friend. Some schools are willing to release the names of past graduates, some aren't, it's worth asking.

If you are looking for any info on Ringling, I have a few friends going there and so far love it. I know a few people who also graduated and all of them are working with great jobs. I know a lot of Ringling students and grads hang around http://www.conceptart.org/forums

For the sake of being as informed as possible you may wish to look into Vancouver Film School, SCAD, and CalArts.

Be sure you continue to try to be as prepared as possible, it's the ones that take the extra step that get the great jobs.

Funny, I'm a Ringling student looking to take some classes at Santa Monica College this fall, so that I could go back to Ringling and have less electives and thus more time to spend on my senior project.
I 'm kind of doing things backwards but you seem to be on the right track. Definitely get as much credits out of the way at SMC no matter what school you end up going to. Ringling is good but they teach you all aspects of animation IE: modeling, textured, rigging, lighting, animation, etc. Some people like that, some don't. My dad made an interesting comparison. He thought it was reminiscent of going to cooking school and learning how to make every type of food IE: deserts, burgers, Spanish food, soup etc. when in actuality there are many different type of chefs with a specific specialty. Of course very few people excel at every aspect (there the 5% that were amazing before Ringling) Most find their niche and tailor their work to that and some just can't handle it and flunk out. And of those that flunk out, some don't come back and others do and graduate in 5 years. Some graduates that go on to awesome jobs actually graduating in 5 years.

I thought this was an interesting quote from studentsreview.com. Trust me it's true BUT on the other hand maby that's why the industry appreciates Ringling grads, cause they know we've been through hell. lol.

"To add insult to injury, they over-accept Computer Animation majors, so they can grab money from those who are going to flunk out their first year. My first year, they told us that if not enough drop out, they would have to evaluate our animations and kick out the worst ones. That, my friends, is incredibly greedy and messed-up."
