View Full Version : How to create nicely shaped Text in 3D

I tried to google it but with no result!
I have a question about the text that is usually seen in movie trailers.
Its not an normal extruded and beveled one but a more pleasing type. It has the shape of a triangle in cross section. Please see the attached Example!
Now my question is... is there an easy way to get the text this way working with the splines normal type provide or do I have to model each and every character on his own?

Which software?
In 3D max i'd first try the sweep modifier above the text.

Hi... Thanks for answering... Actually its Cinema 4D but I guess if theres a method it will be apliable in most of the applications!

I don't know Cinema 4D, but in Maya I would try it this way. Since you said it would not be possible by a bevel operation (maya has a very powerful "bevel plus" feature, but I'm not sure it would give this effect), this is the way I'd try it:
1- create a text in splines
2- copy 3-4 times the text splines in the y-axis, scale down and tweak properly
3- loft the letters to a polygon or nurbs.
I admit that I don't see an easy way to do this... Good luck!

In Cinema4D, the best method seems to be to create the text as paths using Illustrator and import them into cinema.
Outside of modeling each character individually.
Which remains the only way when you want stylized text that will be animated.
Or if your font is made up of constituent objects that you want to remain independent(example-caterpillar font).
There is however, a little recognized tool in C4D called the Vectorizer which can be employed for font work with more success than a basic text object.
That being said, there seems to be no easy way to create custom fonts in full 3D using cinema without having to model much of it manually.
