Best tree limb I have seen yet in this challenge. I'll keep an eye open on this thread.

Thank you :) I perhaps did 4-5 begining of trees before I came up with what I think was a good technique to build them. I've added some branches on this post, its going rather slow since..weel its the weekend and beer and stuff tend to sloooow you down.. I slapped on some "preview" textures..it was ok to texture this time right ?

wops..here is the attachment (I blame it on the beer again)

Cool,
patlab has returned.
You got there an amazing looking tree man.
Damn really nice.
But what is the enchanted of your forest? If I may ask
And what technique did you use?
:applause:
hypercube
05-26-2002, 05:42 PM
Whoa! Pretty sweet for 'preview'. The tree model is rocking. Really nice balance.
Only complaint really would be to have a bigger picture, want to see more :D
MagnusL3D
05-26-2002, 05:43 PM
Iquinuz.X.:
Oooh, the enchantment will be more clear as the picture gets more finished, bare with me :)
The technique..oh..its nothing special, i just found that building it in parts and then connecting them is much easier and you get more control that way, the first tests I did was more the approach of making a whole basic tree and then deforming it but I didnt like the results and how I had to work.
love the tree on the second pic ,good ,keep it up !!!

I love that tree.
Looks like its reaching out to get you!

Yes yes, always bigger renders they ask of you, well heres one :)

05-26-2002, 11:20 PM
I'm sure you saw this already, but I'm seeing a bit of a shine off of the transparent parts of the plane you moss is on up on that upper branch. You might want to do a spec map and maybe reflect map to fully block off the transparent parts. I really love your textures. That grass looks too dam good...:annoyed: (whish I could do that)
:D :D
MagnusL3D
05-26-2002, 11:25 PM
ZrO-1, Yes I know about it will ofcourse be taken care of, proppably I'll just put a clipp map there instead of transperency map like now, but since clipp maps are object orientated in LW im gonna wait to do that untill a little bit later :)
Im happy you like the grass and im sad to say...i just made that in 2 minutes so there should be some green stuff on the ground :/ ..its a planar Y mapped texture and sasquatch fur made to look like grass...

Holy cow that's cool!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO Lightwave!!! :buttrock: :buttrock:
Excellent so far, Patlab! I'm kinda wondering why your thread only has 2 stars :surprised It seems someone has been on the rampage giving every single thread 1 star.... :annoyed:
Anyway, awesome work!! Your entire concept sounds very cool, I'm really looking forward to seeing the entire scene come together...
Updates! Updates! Updates!

5 stars for you guy ! :) :) too awesome ! Lightwave definitly rulez !!! :)
MagnusL3D
05-27-2002, 12:25 PM
Leigh, thank you =) ...yes I hope I can manage to get all up in here *points at head* into this scene. Booring with 1star rampaging people but then again it perhaps motivate to work harder to get more stars ? :)
FANTASTIC TREE!........  i have to learn a lot here!
MagnusL3D
05-27-2002, 10:53 PM
.::STRIKE::. , Hey thanks man !! :)
-OZ- , you learn ? gotta be kiddin me :) but hey thanks !!
Here is a small update, suttle stuff. adding moss and stuff to the tree, using wieghtmaps to define where on the tree i shall grow sasquatch moss and that hanging stuff to, skipped the old booring "clipmaps polygons" trick. still got some tweaking on the hangnings things but i like this much better.
I think i gotta get started on another tree soon..gotta build me a forrest in the end :)
sean_G
05-28-2002, 05:29 AM
i definetly dig the moss better...and i didnt scope your thread until now, but your project is looking pretty clean yet stylistic.
and DUDE... your GRASS kicks A$$,
i really like the way your taking this. i do have one suggestion, however, on your final version of the water shader you might try some incidence, and refractive index ( IOR for h2o is about 1.35)
good luck. . .and good work
MagnusL3D
05-28-2002, 09:46 AM
sean_G, thanks man =) Yes I know water refracts but there is nothing to refract yet :) ..seems everyone likes the grass...and I'm about to make a big change there.....you'll see :)

05-28-2002, 10:13 AM
Wow, Patlab that is looking truly great
The tree looks fantastic!! And the rocks look awesome too
You made the moss with Sasquatch?? Are you using the full version, or the version that comes with LW (Saslite)?? You have to tell me how you made it :bounce: I'm still trying to get the hang of it...
At the moment, I don't really like the way that the water looks - it looks a bit to much like "clingwrap" (that clear plastic you wrap your lunch in)... It might be because of the environment though. Also, the bump map on the water doesn't look too good. Is this going to be a bigger pond - is this bit only part of it? Because if this is going to be the actual final size of it, then surely there are too many ripples... A small pond wouldn't have that much movement on it's surface.
Also, please please please model a proper bottom for the pond - I hate it when people make a river or other body of water, and don't bother to model and texture the river bed... Blizzard's very first Warcraft II cinematic with the orc and the human fighting in the field, had an EXCELLENT cg pond with loads of coarse sand and pebbles and things. You really should check it out as a reference :)
MagnusL3D
05-28-2002, 10:21 AM
Leigh, Yes its full Sas its pretty simple, I just paint out weightmapps on the tree where I want the moss to grow and in sasquatch set density to take its input from that weightmap, then its just a matter of making a green rather short "moss" looking sas features..
The pond is by no means even near completion, and yup there will be a "pond ground" hoooowever it will be one of those mystical extremly deep ponds you find in magical forests, but your gonna be able to se there is structure under the water yes :)
Im planing to play around with the sas/weightmaps thing on the ground also to liven upp the grass later on also..personally i think it looks to much as a golfgreen right now but people seem to like it..we'll see what you have to say about it when i've done those changes :)

the whoriders said it best..
"shot callin', and big ballin'. . . advance to the next level in the game"
btw. do you like "Days of the New"? ... you should design their next album cover. all of them have creepy trees like yours. well not quite like yours
MagnusL3D
05-28-2002, 11:12 AM
Actually Sean_G, I have no idea what your talking about :) next level ? ..Days of the New..never heard of but i'll skipp over cdnow and check em out.

I love it!! I can't wait to see this one finished. I'd make a short just to use this set!!
sean_G
05-29-2002, 08:53 AM
i like the patchy-dispersion, and variable length of the grass. it surprisingly looks even better. the new rock has nice compositional placement, but is really round like the others, maybe some variation? an unusually shaped rock perhaps?
so that white artifact is part of the texture youre gonna fix, looks like your coming right along. you did some nice work on changing up the water shader too. i think its visually more appealing- but pond water usually leans a little more towrds the olive green tint-- maybe your water is "enchanted" though
--just a thought, in all probability it is one you already had, but it would be nice to see some increased detail on th pond/shore. like maybe some smaller roots grasping at it and dipping into its murky depths, possibly some splashes of greenish-algae cover. algae typically covers smaller more stagnant and still ponds like yours.
just a few of my thoughts--but then its NOT MY project.
its looking better and better--keep it comming. later pat

Hey thanks all here is a update..the forrest is growing.. im actually rather upset about my scene right now ..sasquatch insists on changing the "grass" height every time i make a addition to the ground mesh..so rather than modelling i spend more time tweaking sasquatch not to make a mile high grass....owell..

Interesting, XSI was doing something similar for me with its own hair. It was quite annoying but I see your still making some great headway. I like the glowing thing...whatever it is...what is it anyways?

Tellerve, strange thing that hair stuff..i think im not gonna consentrate to much on that now but modell and when all that is done i'll tweak around ...steals to much time now... oh and that glowy thing..those are enchanted flowers that glow :)
sean_G
05-30-2002, 03:05 AM
i like the flowers man... maybe some of THOSE would get me out o trouble with my girl-friend. . . naaa probably not .JK

sean...you sooo silly!
patlab- yeah, probably a good thing to stop monkeying with it. I've just gotten down messing with my grass and I'm not as happy as I wanted. I should have some glowing flowers! Just kidding, I don't have any glowing flowers in my scene...just a glowing faerie that I should probably start modeling.

Zr0-1, pretty close but now that the model is done i think you'll see what it is ...perhaps..im not sure.. rather rushed doing this 3-4 hours...slopy modeling..

05-30-2002, 10:26 PM
Tellerve, a what ? ...is my english that bad ? *hmm* ..hehe :)
Tellerve
05-31-2002, 04:18 AM
Ahh, no your english is great..in fact until you said that and I looked under your avatar I wouldn't have thought you weren't from the good ol' US of A. So, umm well to show my love for the role-playing games and in particular Dungeons and Dragons. A Tarrasque is a huge, i mean friggin' huge, monster that eats and devoures everything in its path and is just generally unpleasant. I was trying to funny and go with something I knew it obviously wasn't and well it obviously didn't work to well did it :D
So....anyways, looking really good man, keep it up. Let's see some nice shag on that mane!

05-31-2002, 05:22 AM

sean_G
05-31-2002, 05:42 AM
if thats sloppy modelling im switching to lightwave, cause my sloppy modelling doesnt look like THAT!... d@mn fine unicorn D@mn fine ... especially the front legs, .
the face could probably be made to look a lttle more noble by adjusting that bump on the bridge of his snout ( in between the eyes and nostrils.) and accentuating the tip of the nose area. but thats just opinion. other than that im enchanted!
im sure youre gonna get get shag-a-dellic, with saslite, on the mane. . . that'll look really nice, especially blowing in the wind just a bit.
(so theres not much hope for my girl-friend now pat, if you keep making stuff like this im gonna have to just save us both the trouble, and dump her now...lol)
MagnusL3D
05-31-2002, 09:26 AM
Tellerve, thank you on the english :) ..aah another joke lost on my dungeons and dragons ignorance ..lets hope i get it next time ;)
Windarr, it will get a tail ..a sasquatch one if all things go well :) Btw..you got some fetish for bunnies do you ? ;)
Sean_G, Well ..lightwave totally rocks for fast modelling..then again..I do work as a 3d modeller so modelling away everyday kinda gets you up to speed.. and there are some fantastic new tools which kinda gives you +4 in modelling skill just installing them :) Tell your girl friend i send her my regards ..hehe
MagnusL3D
06-01-2002, 02:15 AM
Alot of unfinished things still to fix but here is a update :)
Tellerve
06-02-2002, 12:35 AM
"+4" woohoo a dnd joke! good one
I, however, don't really like your new camera angle much at all. I'm not sure if you did that to get a good reflection of the unicorn in the water or not but I'd like to see it back the way it was with the unicorn.
Tellerve
p.s. I think the horses' back legs seem a bit odd, they seem more like a dog's at a westminster dog show than those of a horse. maybe the haunches are a bit too small? I'll try and find some horse references for ya.
windarr
06-02-2002, 03:37 AM
I'm also not into this new camera angle. And I hope you keep working on the unicorn, because the textures on the unicorn look too dead to convey life. After all Unicorn are supposed to be magical, everlasting creatures. So they should have a magical, vibrant aura to them. This unicorn looks too much like some of the wood texture around him/her. Also the pose could use some work, looks a little too stiff. Maybe some more green in the picture too. Or are you going for a dead forest, where life has fled and this sole unicorn lingers on in it's home struggling to get by? That would be cool too, just wondering where you're going with this piece.
:wavey:
MagnusL3D
06-02-2002, 03:46 PM
Tellerve, hehe..dnd jokes are great =) ..girls can get +5 in social skill wearing a short skirt did you know ? ;) ..anyhow the new camera angel yes..it ****ed..so the old one is back. And the horse is still not "ok" ..im trying to get more "life" out of it..its hard..i never did a horse before..i learn alot as it is now :)
Windarr, Actually the unicorn does have some white shine and glow but im not sure it was all that noteable in the previous render (with the bad camera angel) ..but yes your right on target its gonna be a some what black/dead forrest ..magical unicon visiting the pond of life..theres gonna be some magical stuff going on above the water..and probably if i get the time a deserted temple in the background..
Anyways here is a new render with the old camera angel do comment :)
Thanks all
james_martin
06-02-2002, 04:12 PM
Thats much nicer. i like the feel to that alot better
ZrO-1
06-02-2002, 04:52 PM
Yeah man, that's much better. And the unicorn definetly looks more alive now. I think all that the unicorn might need now is for it's hair on the tail and mane to be blown around as if by the animal's movement. I would pro'lly do it with the tail going towards the lake and the mane going away...as if the unicorn was turning/spinning to face the water.
MagnusL3D
06-02-2002, 04:56 PM
Zr0-1, Funny you should mention it, the long hair sasquatch that actually _is_ in the picture are doing what you just described..but i need to tweak sasquatch for like 3-4 hours more before it actually shows aaand shows goood... dont get me wrong now i like sasquatch...but it requires alot of time some times..hmm did i get that right ? *laugh* ...but for now im filling upp the scene with more twigs and trees :)

Oh yeah patlab, that's magnificent now. :buttrock:
The angle, the unicorn, the scene are all fantastic. I suppose the unicorn could use a little more life, but he/she is sure looking a lot better. The ground cover is looking very good too. Can't wait to see what you do for the background.

Odubtaig, Hey :) thanks man..the background is comming along !! :)
Windarr, Yeah that unicorn is driving me nuts, the sasquatch parts need a major overhaul to be more life like its on my todo list :)
Thanks all I do like comments its keeps me pushing beyond what I normaly do !! :)
MagnusL3D
06-03-2002, 09:32 PM
Here is a early wip of the small temple im planing to put in the background, it will only take upp a small part of the bakground and be overgrown by trees and stuff..and ofcourse there will be more trees in the background also. For now its only a simple box texture slapped on to see if architeture and texture fits the right kinda "mood" i want :) ... anyways im going away a couple of days so this will be the last update for some time.. since i cant work at my brothers computer on this ;) But I will sure check out what you other people are doing !!

Hey all, back from the so called "vacation" i've tweaked some stuff today but realy havent had much time to work on this but now im back :) ..anyhow still fighting with that background thing ..sasquatch seem to have something against the fog level and just kinda "disapears" instead of fading to black.. the little temple in there is just put in there for now, its not textured currectly to fit the scene yet. feel free to comment !! :)

Actually, I think that is looking really cool!! (I only saw it now, have been away for the weekend, and busy all day :p)
I love the way the unicorn is being lit by the pond :) The cathedral looks cool too!! It just maybe needs to be a little more dilapidated.
Mycket bra!!

06-10-2002, 06:25 PM
it's looking really amazing! I'd maybe scale up the temple in the back a little to fill more of the negitive space back there. Add some more of the glowing flowers, it would be really nice to see at least one in the forground so we could tell what it is! The unicorn is looking really good, love the bright lighting on it. Keep it up, looking forward to the next update.
Dave Black
06-10-2002, 06:31 PM
Looking very cool!
Only crit would be that it seems a bit dark overall. Perhaps that's what you were shooting for, but the forground and the background seem to be a bit too contrasting.
Love the Unicorn and the pool.

Absolutely incredible work Patlab. I viewed it earlier and didn't say anything because it looked so magnificent I was scared to say so and keep you from doing something to make it look even more fantastic. I keep wondering if maybe the surrounding forest should be brighter, but then I think it would take away from your focus on showing this as being the only life left in the forest. So I guess it's fine as is.

...Just got back to this thread.
I love this latest pic. I think you just jumped to number one in the "enchanted" department. That is by far the most enchanting (not just magical) piece so far. I really love the contrast between your enviroment and your unicorn. Just perfect in that respect. IMO, I wouldn't touch a thing in the foreground. I'd work on the stuff in the background though. I'd add in some more trees between what you have and the cathedral. Also it needs something in the far background behind the cathedral. Fantastic stuff so far though. Really beutifull.

Hello all, I regretfully must say I will not be able to finish my picture the way I wanted it. To much work and other stuff have stolen to much time from me, So this post will be the last uppdate, perhaps I will be able to finish it for my self after the competion however this will be my "final" picture for the comp.
Thanks all for all the comments !!!!

I love it!!! Great work Patlab. It's a pity you can't finish it to your own satisfaction, but you do have an excellent piece worthy of praise. I do want to make one quick comment though. If you are going to use this as a finished image, the tree in the foreground on the left side of the image with the moss, seems quite illuminated. Like there is a light source on the other side, doesn't look right, and it detracts from the image I think. You could probably just take it into photoshop and darken it if you want, wouldn't really warrant render time I think.
Anyways, congrats, you've got one of my votes.

hey pat,
your last render is killer. i like the camera angle, its got good lighting especially on the unicorn, and sweet shading on the water. pretty awsome!
