I looking forward to a Blender displacement mode for mapped normals too. But until then this is just fine.

Normal mapping is, compared with the other techniques, quite new in the CG world. Most of the ¨high end¨ apps still don't have it.... so I guess there is a loooong road before Blender will have normal mapping.
But ! Since the game engine is pendding a full re-write and normal mapping is mostly used for games.... the developers could give us a big surprise (but that is only me speculating)
