How can i create a texture in Max 5 that becomes more opaque as the object it is applied to becomes larger.

for instance - i create a beach. the water object is pie shaped, the thinest piece being at the very edge of the shore, and growing thicker as it extends into the sea. How would i apply a material to the water object so that the water is clearer at the very edge of the beach, and becomes less clear, perhaps changing color, as it extends further out. Thanks!

You could simply paint a map for it and project it down onto the sea object :)
Use gray values to make it more opaque and less opaque in the appropriate areas.

Yep.

Try a Gradient Ramp in the Opacity slot for the water.

Copy it to the Diffuse Color channel for the sand, and change the tabs in the gradient to go from tan sand to green/blue sand.
