Hi,

I am curious if anyone successfully renders out a Lat-Long panorama in Maya 2011 (Windows x64) with any of these panoramic lens shaders?

- JS_panoramic: I got completely black render returned.
- lume shader library's Wraparound: I tried installing it on Maya 2010. The shader shows up in the Hypershade, but I couldn't kick off rendering. Do I have to use the lume.dll from exact corresponding Max version? (i.e. Max 2010's lume.dll for Maya 2010 and Max 2011's lume.dll for Maya 2011?)
- latlong_lens shader http://www.vi-motion.de/latlong_Tutorial/: Maya crashed when I hit render.

I will really appreciate if someone can shed some light on how he/she renders panorama in Maya 2011-x64.

Thanks,
Jason

Tried them all and couldn't get them to work either...

Luckily you don't really need a lens shader if you are willing to go for the manual route (create a camera, set its aspect ration to 1:1, in the render globals set the resolution to something square (e.g. 1024 square), render six images (in 32bit float / no lens shader - assuming you want to use this as a custom HDR) rotating the camera in 90 steps, so you have everything covered, stich the images in photoshop or some other app so they match the "vertical cross" layout ( like that (http://labs.solidworks.com/BlogData/CubeMapGuide/image-003.png) ), use HDRShop to convert the verticalCross to a latlong image).

Sounds like a lot of hassle, but it can easily be automated for most parts with basically 5 lines of mel and you'll be done in under 5 minutes - depending on your rendertimes of course.

Took me longer to fiddle with all those old latlong-shaders :)

same issue, wish that lume shaders still worked.

I used the dr_Panorama shader avalable in dr utilities suite.

Works in 2011 on OSX so my guess is it will work on Windows 2011 too, but worth a shot.

Just be sure to make sure mental ray is set to Raytrace instead of Scanline, it will only work that way for OSX.

Hey, Thanks guys for the great inputs. Now I have couple alternatives to try with.

cheers,

if thoses don't work you can always try to render 6 square images with 6 camera point up down, right, left, front and back.
Each camera have to have a FOV of 90.
Once theses images have been rendered you need to import them in a system ( eg. NUKE ) that allow to change a cubic projection to lat/long projection.

Attached is one of the 6 camera rigs discussed above that I created. Use it all the time works perfectly. I use a program called cubic converter to assemble qtvrs

Hey I know this thread I had the same problem with the js_panoramic shader using mental ray in Maya 2011 x64. All I had to do was download Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64) from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyID=bd512d9e-43c8-4655-81bf-9350143d5867
and it no longer crashes and works great.
edit: JS_panoramic is actually inaccurate it will not render anything directly above your camera unless you increase the height which drastically distorts your image and still misses parts. This was a problem as I am rendering a car interior and wasnt displaying the ceiling lights. I even tested this in the sample scene they provided putting an object directly above the camera and nothing shows up. I installed drUtilSuite and it worked much better giving a full 360 even though it said it was only made for up to 8.5 it worked fine on maya 2011 x64 I didnt try and of the other shaders in the pack just dr_Panoramic_v1

Hey, I'm also trying to get this done but I am having problems installing this drutilsuite in Maya 2011.

How did you go about it?

Here are several builds I compiled of Maya 2011 64-bit compatible mental ray lens shaders that can render panoramas. Note: The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=bd512d9e-43c8-4655-81bf-9350143d5867) is required to use them. Also, here is a link to some notes about the JS_panoramic shader (http://www.andrewhazelden.com/blog/2011/02/js_fisheye-and-js_panoramic-mental-ray-shaders-compiled-for-maya-2011-x64-on-windows/) and some notes about the cubemap and latlong shaders (http://www.andrewhazelden.com/blog/2011/01/latlong_lens-and-cubemap_lens-mental-ray-shaders-compiled-for-maya-2011-x64-on-windows/). Included with each of the shaders are sample Maya scenes.
