Hello!

My boss have an old Softimage 3.5 (from Microsoft!...)

He wants to upgrade!:applause:

But he will upgrade to Softimage 3D 4.0!!!:scream:

I can see a lot of "troubles" of upgrading to this almost dead 3D package. Ok, it is still being used by some great studios, but I know that Avid don't want to invest money in this package anymore. The only reason SI3D still lives is because it was filling the gap XSI didn't. It does not have good updated resources, books, training material (DVDs, Videos) and online tutorials... And XSI is the Avid's flagship now.

So, please, help me telling me another advantages Maya has over SI3D, so that I can tell my boss, and hopefully convince him to switch to Maya, instead of upgrading to SI3D 4.0!!!

Please, help me Maya comunity!! I don't want to learn another 3D package that is going to be dead in a few years!
Any tip is very apreciated!!!

Thanks in advance!

Roger

Why don't you go with XSI?

I am sure price is the issue... justifying Maya over SI|3D vs. XSI over SI|3D is two very different things when dealing with bean counters... I do reccomend that you push the XSI though.

Yes, you are right, JDex.

Price is the issue! If I push the XSI, my boss will think I'm crazy.

The reasons I think Maya Complete is a better choice than SI3D are:
(Please, help me filling this, too!)

1- It has Mental Ray 3.2 (SI3D has 2.1, I guess)

2- The best price/performance 3D app, right now.

3- Lots of new/updated books, DVDs, tutorials, courses.

4- Has a prosperous "life". SI3D is almost dead.

5- Extremely customizable.

6- I have an intermediate knowled level of Maya
(well, I think this doesn't make a difference for my boss, but anyway...;) )

7- Help filling this and more, please!

Thanks again,

Roger

There's always the official sales pitch from Alias themselves...
Softimage to Maya: http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/file/softimage_to_maya.pdf

Would think most things are at least mentioned there :)
