ive done it with a still frame no problem (greyscale on position object operater)) but how do i get it to work with a movie?

You vimeo is private can't see it.

Sounds like you want to use Birth Texture (set it to emit for the duration of the movie) and delete particles that are not in the white, assuming you are using white/greyscale as your emission texture.

Sticking them to the material is a little more difficult, you could use a speed by surface (set to continuous & by greyscale) + Lock and Bond (to the movie) object combo. Getting a fully controllable motion will be the hard part.

Thanks,

going to have a look tomorrow properly, the video I posted is working now I'd just uploaded it so it was going through the motions...

here's a ref as to what I'm trying to do

i was wondering how you manage to get the particles to stick to one particular part of the the movie?
so a particle that appears on the end of the trumpet would stay on the end of as it moves about?

Well you could motion track it and/or implement a Box#3 op that would sample the point position and the point gradient of the greyscale to help keep the particles locked to it.
