I want to create a lighting setup that will mimic a full day and night cycle. I want the final setup to be condensed into a 3 min sequence, like on a nature documentary where the day passes really fast and you see the clouds swirling around in the sky. Anyway I'm sure you know what I mean.

Could I use an animated sky light to do this? Is an animated sky light even possible?

Or and animated HDRI image?

Or a light following an arc over my scene?

I'm really not sure how to achive the effect I want.

If I could capture a scetion of film of the effect that I want, could I use this as a the sky light or convert it to a HDRI file?

As you can tell I'm a little lost any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

:D

you must have a light that move on the sky to make the shadows right and an animation sky because the clouds dont stay if you want to work with more detail the light position influence the clouds

I don't know what software you are using but I do this all the time in 3ds. I use the sunlight and just animate the time function and it is as easy as that. For the clouds, it really depends on how you are making your clouds, if you are using a sky sphere with a bitmap then maybe animating the uvw modifer, if you are using a procedural texture on your shpere then just animate the phasing.
