(http://assets.cgsociety.org/nvart/215385_1275879209/1024bound)In the not to distant future Sys has been commissioned by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Show is prototype one in drive mode and further back is prototype two in climb mode.

The task to design a vehicle that can:
1. Protect its internal crew from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs)
2. Remain operational after a IED explosion (based on current explosive power of current IEDs)
3. Climb and descend rocky or loose soil up to an 80% grade while engaging enemy targets
4. On smooth roads sustain speeds of 105 miles per hour
5. On improvised dirt roads sustain speeds of 30 miles per hour
6. Operate at 40 miles per gallon (MPG)
7. Operate up to twenty five minutes while submerged
8. Engage large numbers of enemy targets within one half second

Syd’s approach to each requirement:
1. To protect the internal crew from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) Syd designed the vehicle in a “V” shape with plenty of armor at the base of the V. This design allows the blast to have little surface to hit directly. The majority of the blast energy is redirected up and outward away from the hull. The hull can withstand standard small arms fire and RPGs
2. To remain operational after an IED explosion, the vehicle can continue to operate even if one leg is blow off on each side for the vehicle. The middle leg can take over for a damaged front or back leg. On flat terrain the vehicle can run slowly in tire mode with only one leg on one side and at least two legs on the other side.
3. Climbing and descending rocky or loose soil up to an 80% grade while engaging enemy targets is accomplished by rotating the wheel assemblies up and extending robotics feet with forward mono claws. The legs and “hip” joints have range of motion and hydraulic powered movement.
4. To reach sustain speeds of 105 MPH on smooth roads the vehicle uses independent electric engines in each leg geared for the speed requirement and controlled by a central computer.
5. On very rough dirt roads the vehicle can sustain speeds of 30 miles per hour depending on road conditions.
6. To operate at 40 MPG the vehicle uses both an internal power cell and gas powered generator to power propulsion, life support and internal equipment. The all electric is very efficient and resistant to magnetic wave pulse events.

7. To operate submerged the using is water tight to 20 feet below the surface. The gas powered electric generator is shut down to reserve breathable air; while the vehicle operates on battery and power cell while the generator is off line. All guns need to be plugged before submerging and the plugs can be cleared once above water quickly using blank rounds.

8. To engage targets in the front of the vehicles the primary armament is a 40 mm cannon that fires up to 10 rounds per minute accompanied directly below it by a mini-gun that can fire up to 1 000 rounds per minute. On the top of the vehicle is a camera driven .50 caliber mini-gun able to tilt up and spin 360 degrees. The vehicle can also be fitted with anti-tank rockets.
