Hi Morgan,

I'll just start off by saying there is a huge difference between product design and architectural visualisation. I don't think it's necessary to have a degree for arch vis as there are many places that won't require an architectural background. You obviously have to be good at visualisation though. Most of it these days is done using 3ds Max (sometimes Cinema 4D) and a render engine such as VRay.

Product Design on the other hand involves being able to design the product which includes understanding the user needs/ergonomics/materials/engineering/manufacturing and many other factors. Illustration skills will involve good sketching ability/Prototyping/Photoshop/Illustrator and a Nurbs based 3d program such as Rhino or Solidworks.

Good luck
