Has anybody actually bought one of Gnomon's DVDs before? Are they any good? I mean it's a lot cheaper than taking the class, but there must be very limited information...you can only pack so much into an hour and a half lecture.

Yes. A friend of mine bought some DVD's, and they were excellent. It all depends what you want, I got a lot out of the dynamic DVD's, but not as much from the modelling DVD's, as I knew most of it, but it's always interesting to see new techniques and little tricks which you may not know about.
You can pause and go back as many times as you need to as well; which you can't do in a lecture. If you can afford them, I highly recommend buying them- the ones you need that is.

Wow!!!! Simply amazing!!!
This does beg the question, did he finish his assignment t Lucasfilm (strange because design still goes on well into postproduction) or did he do them in his spare time? Just curious ;-)

Feng didn't actually just join Gnomon. He has been teaching a class at the gnomon school for some time. He now has some new gnomon branded DVD's available from the Gnomon Workshop which is part of the Gnomon experience, but he has been a part of Gnomon for a some time.
Not to nit pick or anything. :)
I am getting these though.
For he was wondering about the value of Gnomon DVD's.
I have most of the Gnomon DVD's, and they are almost all worth more (in my mind) than the asking price for them.
You can learn a lot in 2 hrs of material.
I think it's Dynamics 2 where Alex Alvarez starts smoking out these 3 scenes in about a matter 2 minutes, then realizes out loud that "I'm moving kind of fast" it's so funny, but you get a good sense of what a Maya professional workflow should be like, and the material is all there. You'll need to watch those 2 minutes a few times to catch up to Alex. He can whip that sh*t out like crazy.

Man, I just know when the time comes, they will sell out of these DVDs and I will be stuck without any. Can we not pre-order these?
By the way, I have recently been looking into University and I have been showing the recruiters what I want to accomplish, in other words, I show them what Feng has done and tell them, this is how I want to draw, I want to become as good as the 'GOD' who made these sketches...... Most of them are quite perplexed... Hehehe
Enough said... I WANT THE DVDs.

i didn't mean to say having only maya stuff to start with is bad btw, it makes perfect sense to teach maya when so many people are using it now or realizing they need to learn it. some day i'll take advantage of them as well i'm sure, just no time to learn maya at the moment, and no money besides heh.
i'll definitely add the maquettes dvd to my todo list though, seems like a very interesting subject.

I'm probably gonna get at least Sketching so I can learn a new style and adapt.

by the way I think they are $45 for students that is how much I have been paying for them. Better place you pre-orders now before they disapear. If they are any questions on Gnomons tittles let me just say that I am a total dweeb when it comes to 3D I really need help (no really I DO!) but after the first one I watched I was busten out some interesting stuff the rest is history. Since most of us cant afford $1600 a class this is our only alternative.

09-18-2003, 08:21 PM
Hi everyone...
I'm thrilled to see such enthusiasm over Feng's DVDs... they are super cool and I think you'll all dig them. The image quality is super crisp, so you can really see all the details in his work.
chrislee8: Analog refers to the fact that the DVDs cover traditional media. At Gnomon we offer 'digital' and 'analog' courses... that's how we chose to distinguish them in our brochure, etc.
Bundles... we will offer an 'Analog' bundle on September 29th that will include the sculpture DVDs and concept design DVDs.
As far as pricing goes, they will be $69/each. If you are student you get a 29% discount which brings the price to $49. The Analog bundle will have a 10% discount... and if you're a student you get 29% on top of that. :)

HI Alex, just a suggestion,
I think a series of character concept DVDs by Kevin Chen (touching points on anatomy as well as design issues) would be of incredible value to most cg artists.

Aw nuts, I already bought the sculpture ones. No discount for me then. A lot of other stuff I was planning on buying is going to have to wait now (sorry scanner).
Seriously though, have you guys ever considered placing clips from the dvds in the store to go with the screen shots? Okay, so I'm only asking because the two week wait for delivey on top of the ten days I have to wait for this to come is going to be unbearable (and the US is almost a day behind Australia on top of that).

I'd love to get my hands on the sculpture DVDs, but am wondering if they are all region 1 or 2? Anyone know?
Man, 45 dollars shipping to Ireland seems excessive, even 23 dollars for slow delivery seems a bit much for a single DVD, you guys in the States must really get screwed by your postal service or something...
Anyway, back to the question, anyone know if these are region free or just region 1 or anything?

The two sculpture dvds I have are region 0 and I'm fairly certain the rest of the Gnomon stuff is as well.

Ok, first off, the DVDs are 100% region 0(zero). It's actually a bullet point on the box.
belail:
I ordered only 2 of the set to see if I liked them before I bought the rest.
I got the "Quick Sketching" and "Drawing Vehicles" DVDs.
They are both really great.
In the "Quick Sketching" DVD, Feng goes over the tools, how they work, and pointers on what to buy. Actually really usefull stuff. I was afraid that it was going to be just a dvd of him making cool stuff and not really explaining it. I was happy to find that he went above and beyond the call of duty. He actually was giving pointers and tips throughout that were just gold. There is a bonus section in the this one that has him showing you drawing exercises designed to warm yourself up before drawing. I mean, he even shows you how to make straight lines without a ruler, and goes through the best ways to freehand elipses. It's awsome. He also shows how to use lineweight effectivley, and also how to do marker rendering. Actually, it's just totally packed with amazing info.
The second DVD was "Drawing Vehicles". This one has a bonus section talking about all the tools he uses in depth, how to save money buying them, and which ones work together. Then there's a section on drawing thumbnails, and then creating the vehicles you design. He takes you through 2 vehicles from start to finish, including inking and marker rendering. My only gripe with this DVD, is that he was using too light of a marker to setup his perspective and "Draw Through" lines. They did'nt appear at all on my TV, and it was the whole reason I bought the DVD. I'm going to try watching that one on my computer, though, as my TV is pretty old. Other than that, it was awsome!
If you have any questions, let me know. I learned soooo much. I finally get the "Feng Way". Very happy with my purchases. I think I'll be getting the rest of the set.

After watching the Vehicle one on my laptop, I can actually see the very light marker lines that were gone on my TV.
Just to let you know.

They are absolutely fantastic!!! I've learned more in 5 minutes with Feng than in 6 months of study on my own.

I am lucky enough to have all four of Feng DVDs as well as ALL of the Gnomon DVDs.
I watch one everyday, or at least try to.
I would really like to see more actual MAYA hands on DVDs though.
For those of us who went to Art School already these analog tapes are not as necessary.
What you can't get out there [by this I mean, Certified Alias training and user groups] - is the quality and in depth MAYA training that has been offered on the Gnomon DVDs.
The Feng dvds are great and so are John Brown scupting ones, but I for one need MORE MAYA PLEASE!

They are aimed for beginners (the first ones must be though or something is very strange (if nothing is said otherwise that is)).
