I'm trying to buy a plat-panel monitor for $500 or less and am looking for suggestions please! I know Best Buy carries a viewsonic (15") for about $300 which looks really nice but I am concerned about color accuracy and contrast and such. Can anyone suggest a couple good monitors in my price range? 15" is okay though I am really looking for a decent 17" monitor. Thanks much.

Wait for deals at Dell - they regulary have nice deals on monitors. Make sure you get one with DVI.

Thanks, I'm checking this stuff out, which is cool, but my real question is about getting the most for my money. Getting a Dell monitor 40% off or something doesn't do me a whole lot of good if it's got poor performance for graphics work. Any help on that front? Back to searchin the deals :)

i was surprised to see that some flat screen monitors aren't DVI and use the regular old monitor hook up. kinda cheatin' ya.

what ever one you decide on, make sure you do some major research on it. while most to a good job, i know a lot of people don't like them for gaming and for color correction'ness. but with a budget of $500, you might want to wait for a good deal, or save more money [since the good ones cost $$$].

what's holding me back is the low resolution of them. my brother-in-law has one but the highest resolution it hits is 1024x786 [sucks for any art program]. when you look at the flat monitor that can reach the higher res, you look at more $$$.

There's a review link on slickdeals. I know some UltraSharp are rebranded Samsungs. Personally I think Dell is the best place to buy good quality LCDs.

Yep, I'll probably get that one next time it goes on sale, since I believe this sale is over shortly and I can't buy just yet. Also to consider, is that DVI? I can't really tell from the specs, it talks about Analog as well as Digital so I'm kind of confused. I guess I'll come back to it when I get my cash.

In my experiance, you can't go wrong with Samsung monitors. I have never seen a Samsung that looked bad (though some look better than others).
The pixel refresh-rate might not be that high on the Samsungs, but unless you live to game, I don't think the refresh-rate is anything to worry about.

I'm running dual 172t's (17" 1280x1024) I got them for $600 a piece when they were still pretty new to the market.

As far as where to go for LCD reference & purchasing (if you're in the US) I really like Monitors Direct (http://shop.monitorsdirect.com/searchresults.asp?search_id=5) They have some 1024X768 15" Hitachi monitors listed for as low as $250 right now.

If you click the above link it will take you to the LCD page, where you can then click on a monitor you are interested in and get detailed specs for comparisson.
