I am a student from China. I was accepted by FIT, SCAD and Syracuse University in MFA Illustration program. In China I can not find much information about art schools in U.S (I choose all schools by USNEWS) and I do not have enough money to visit these schools, so it becomes very difficult to me to make a decision. Now, this forum is just like a beacon hope to me. I hope some kind people can give me some advices. It is cost a lot to study in U.S and I am not rich, also my works are not strong enough to enter some famous art schools like SVA or Art Center College and my budget is limited (just enough for two years MFA program), so this chance to learn is very important to me. I want to learn traditional painting and drawing skills in schools to have a nice basic and my goal is to do concept arts in some game companies. Who knows the illustration programs in these schools and can give me some advises? And I also want to know, in U.S, can a student in MFA program can also transfer to other schools? At last, is there any one who was accepted to SVA or ACCD can share the experience with me? I just want to know what level the portfolio should be for application and what kind of work the teachers want to see. Sorry for my poor English and hope some one can help me.

Well, my friend.. about what schools want to see in your portfolio.. my understanding is that it needs to be like.. realistic drawings .. well or at least that was what they asked my when applying to Art Institutes, they dont want to see fantasy drawings or manga drawings or a drawing of your xbox, ( quoting from the portfolio guide that i got ) they want to see detailed drawings.. like.. draw your hands... or draw the members of your family.. and draw some landscapes.. yep.. but some schools.. base their acceptance dessicion in your grades.. your GPA, which i think yours is pretty good cause you were accepted in SCAD.. i was rejected from scad .. they said that their desicion was based on how i did in highschool... no so good.. about the money.. yepp its really expensive.. i have a friend that was accepted in SCAD too.. but just couldnt afford it, not even with schoolarships or loans.. cause she is International student so she couldnt get alot of those either.

Anyway, hope it helped.

Thank you jesse92. I know they need realism works (last year I use concept pictures for application and failed), but I do not know how nice the works should be. No body shows their works for application and in art schools galleries I can see many works but I do not know why those works are good. The works are too abstract, and do not have rank like here (here I know which works are good), so with my limited knowledge I do not know which work is good and which is not so good in art schools students works. And to me students’ works is a kind of proof of schools. By the way, my GPA is very low, because I feel my university in China is not so good; it is just like a factory. People there are all in same style as their teachers, so I do not want to learn from them, I learned by myself (do not spend much time on school classes). Because the bad experience in university, the chance to study in U.S is even more important to me to choose a nice art school to study. I also hope some one can share their works for applications that will be very helpful to me.
