View Full Version : Image Planes slowing down UI in orthographic view?
Lunatique 05-25-2002, 08:12 AM I'm modeling a head, and I've set up two image planes(front/side), but when I view them in orthographic view, it makes everything slow to a craw, yet in perspective view, it's fine. Is there a setting I could tweak to fix that? I tried faster interaction, but while it works, it degrades the image while I'm moving things around.
All I've done so far is creating a profile polygon shape, and then splitting it into finer details. It's not like I have tons of stuff that requires heavy CPU usage. I don't have the same problem if I just start out with primitives.

AFAIK that has something to do with maya's use of overlay panes - and whether your graphics card supports them or not
there's an environment variable that did the trick for me
Variable Name = MAYA_SLOW_DRAWPIXELS
Variable Value = 1
put this in Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Advanced->System Variables

I have the same problem. What i do is makeing a new camera:
Panels > Orthographic > new > front.
Then i create a new Image plane from that camera and then go back to your first camera:
Panels > Orthographic > front.
Then it shouldn't lag.
If you want to change the image plane just switch to the camera that you created and when you want to model switch to the orginal camera.

You can use this mel script to build image planes %500 times faster than Maya's default ones.

Sheep Factory- Thank you for that script! Saved my butt!
stunndman/Mikkel Jans- Thanks for your advice. I'm going to use the script Sheep posted for now. If it starts to get weird on me, I'll try your suggestions. :)
