View Full Version : dopesheet slowdown..
MaTaDoR 09-17-2003, 03:46 PM whenever Im working with something and I open up the dopesheet maya turns extremely choppy and nothing helps at that point but to completely close and re-open maya..
its odd cause if I work with half dope sheet and lets say perspective view it works fine but switching to a full camera view is an absolute disaster... ive closed the dope panel to show other things and it just doesnt work.. any ideas on how to work with this? at this point ive gotta wait longer to make my changes and then restart every once in awhile... sux

I've never experienced dopesheet slowdown.
People could probably help you better if you posted info like:
Maya version:
Operating System:
Graphics Card:
Memory:
System Specs:
Someone with a similar set up could then confirm if they have the same problem.
Have you also posted this on the Alias site?

WHAT!?!?!? You use the dope sheet? Why? Just use the time slider dude. Its right there, and you don't have to open up another window. Wanna scale your animation? Just hold shift and highlight the keys red, then grab the outside arrows and pull. Wanna move a key? Shift-drag over the key, now left click to move it. The time slider is very functional without taking a lot of space. Now, the graph editor is what you need open.

Curious to his his response to this. I'd love to know where the use of the dopesheet comes in. Is it just a preference for traditional animators?
Just been really curious what advantages the dope sheet might have.

geforce 2 gts 32mb (ugh)
512mb pc133 (ugh)
1 gig amd thunderbird (nowadays, ugh)
Ive actually just started using a new rig from jason sheifler's "fast animation rigs" (great dvd) and no matter what I do my scene is nice and fast all around which makes me believe that its the other rigs im using that's slowing down as I set more keys..
in fact one of the rigs im trying (free from www.lospencil.com) uses the whole body to set up all of the morph targets which im thinking is just adding a ton of info..

im using the dopesheet cause it seems like good practice so far and its been working out well but ill take a look at dragging and see how that works sometime.

i am also suffering a massive slow down with the Dope sheet being opened.....I manage just fine with Graph Editor which i find ironic because it appears to display more data.
my guess is it has to do with having lots of keys frames....but then why does the Graph editor update so fast in comparison.
I would really like to use the Dope sheet.....

I used to be a big fan of the dope sheet once upon a time. Its a better visual instead of those red tick marks, but once I was told you could do everything in the time slider, well, I dropped the dope sheet and I seem to get along fine without it. Since I also have the graph editor up most of the time on my second monitor, my key manipulation can be done inside there as well. Its just one less window to open.

Using the dope sheet in combination with character sets, the graph editor and the time line makes for some very fast and powerful animation tools, particularly if you've got a complex character. I don't always need to use all of them, but I wouldn't want to do without any of them.
