Pop-up menu symbols?

i'm thinking you got the fonts in your quadsettings screwed up.

go to customize, then the quads tab.
click the 'advanced options' button in the bottomright and check if the fonts are set to a weird fonts [in the fonts group, bottomright corner of the advanced options window], standard is Arial I believe.
