View Full Version : Enchanted Forest - Environment/Character - PedramK
PedramK 05-25-2002, 03:03 AM Ok, here it goes, im entering my first CGT contest! :D
ofcourse, with not too high hopes, seing all the contestants already participating
anyway
my idea is a kind of gnome house somewhere in a forestish area near a stream of water with a gnome somewhere around (dont want to spoile it) doing something gnomish.

Yeah it's not a bad start! :D
One thing I'd crit right now are the stairs. You have steps on the more shallow slope, but no steps on the steeper slope by the hole. Doesn't make sense right now. Will it be a slide?
PedramK
05-25-2002, 06:44 PM
hey again. :)
thx for the comments fellah and zro-1.
to answer your question zro-1, there will be a ladder there leading up to the door.
here is a small update

aye, though im not too sure about the vines.
but heres another small update, probably last update until monday.

Awesome, really awesome. It needs some vines running up above the hight of the door too. :D That walkway really shaped up great! it looks sweet now.
PedramK
05-26-2002, 04:11 AM
yea, gonna add some more of those vines now that noone seem to complain about them not fitting in or anything.
Though i got another problem, im not sure about what kind of style trees im gonna go for the background..like simple ones with mapped planes, or full out and modell fluffy trees with leaves and stuff..humhum:rolleyes:
heres how the trees will be if i would go with the simple version
with planes and stuff. Dont hesitate to drop in with your thoughts

are we allowed to use older models in the scenes?
cuz if we are allowed, i might be reusing a tree i made for an earlier scene

well gee guys, dont you have anything to comment about or even the slightest crit?
ah well, i got myself some time to add some decent modelled
trees and the beginning of the "groundcoverage".
atm theres just simple grass.

Dam bro this thing is really starting to kick a$$. I like the more detailed trees much more than the leaf-planes idea. I'm looking and looking and the only other thing that I can crit is where the tree meets the ground. Right now it's sort of rounded-in. I think it should meet with more of a right angle or even rounded-out instead. Can't think of anything else, it's looking really sweet.

Not only do I have a comment, dude, but I've got some stars for yah. 5 of 'em. This is absolutely the best entry I've seen so far. This is really good. The only two things I'd say are fix the bottom of the trees, and texture this thang.
PLEEEESSSEEEE!!
Keep it up.

05-27-2002, 03:19 AM
what howard said...
I'd say that the main trees need some detail modeled into them... a bump map wouldn't give enough...
we need a jawdrop smilie!
PedramK
05-27-2002, 08:33 AM
Thanks for the comments howard :) yeap, the bottom of the trees are topmost on my todo list.
Dragonius, i agree that the main tree seems a bit emtpy :) but im not sure what else to add "body vise" theres gonna be more vines and "stuff", but besides those i was thinking bumps and perhaps displace.

The grass and leaves rule, and the vines and details, it's all just great. You're already on the tree base thing, so that's all I can think of..too sweet. Look forward to further details, and seeing who lives there and what they're up to. Really nice style.
Are you going to keep it all in pale and white, or add colour as you texture? I kind of like the look it's getting as-is even.
WOW!ur work is damn cool!!! one of the best i seen here!!!!

PedramK
05-28-2002, 01:59 PM
Howard Day: thanks :)
samartin: Im not quite sure yet. There will be bumps and displacemaps however,
and if i get time, i will most likely 'try' and do the colormaps aswell.
dodo3d: Its made with shag fur.
Sgt.Pepper: Thats a cool idea, though considering there is a stream of water straight
below the pathway, it would be a tad dangerous for them kids to swing there :)
chi: heh :) thanks
Anyway, heres is the latest render.
Not much new, except that iv added the watersurface and
some more foliage. Now im going to start working on the lil gnomecharacter :)

Hooray!!! I finally found something I can crit ;) :D
There is one piece of hanging moss (upper right corner) that is laying against the trunk of the tree. It seems to me that it is hovering a bit too far off of the surface of the trunk. :bounce:
hehehe
PedramK: seriously this piece looks so good already I kind of think that adding color to this might actually take away from the piece. You'll have to try it of course and see how it turns out, but it might be nice to keep a white-shaded version also.

Only thing I can think of to ask is, where is the water? I remember earlier seeing a sort of stream between the trees, but it's hard to make out now, and can't see the water you're talking about.
Everything else is just, well.. :xtreme:

05-29-2002, 04:36 AM
Thanks for the comments all :)
Zro-1, thanks for pointing out that lil "accident", its fixed now ;)
hypercube, yea, its very hard to spot the stream now with all the grass and stuff and when everything is gray. But if you look closely, you can still see a lil bit of it, straight below the pathway.
I started working on the character (just a lil bit of face atm).
its pretty rought right now, but i guess you'll get the "picture" :)

Yowsers! The detail of the moss/grass/plants is really exciting. Very alive scene. Look forward to seein' some gnomes running around in it and adding even more life.
I'm not sure if I'm looking in the wrong place or what but I don't see the water or anything that to me looks like water. *shrugs* still looks good though
Tellerve
holy crap......... one thing, i hope you plan to use lots of displacements on your main tree objects, or i think it will be fruitless.... just saying what comes to mind... and if the tree-house stays so smooth, then your image is fragged........
but WOW, beautiful scenery...........
Mike Pauza
05-29-2002, 06:24 PM
Like the style and detail.
PedramK
05-29-2002, 07:56 PM
Zro-1, hehe yea, i thought it would be kinda funny to do him like that :)
Tellerve, thanks.
The water is pretty well hidden now with all the vegetation on the ground
and the gray color. But if you look closely, just between the two trees and straight
below the pathway, you can see a little bit of it.
Kaos, aye, bump and displace will be added when im done with all modelling.
But im even thinking about redoing the main tree and add some more detail to it,
but we'll see how well the displace and bump turns out. ;)
Mike Pauza, thanks :bounce:

parallax
05-29-2002, 10:11 PM
very nice.
You will defenitely have to texture those treehouses, and with quite a good map, or you might lose consistency with all those beautifully detailed plants and trees you got there.
Are you going to use a displacement map, or model all the detail by hand??

Yeah, I have to agree with dober about the hat. Now that you have a shot that is pulled back a bit his hat does look a little too cone-like. Adding a bulged section right around the hat where the top of his head would stretch the hat would pro'lly do the trick.
PedramK
06-01-2002, 07:09 PM

Only thing I can pick out right now is that there is a seam between the roots and trunk of the tree. Right where the texture goes from an angle with the roots to vertical with the trunk. It might not even be noticeable once you put the grass back into the render but right now it sticks out a bit.

PedramK
06-04-2002, 03:12 PM
Zro-1, yea, that part is a troublesome part for me as uvwmapping is a nomansland from my point of view :) but thankfully, it wont show up when grass and vines are in the scene :p (thank god!)
Scott Harris, yea, i might once the contest is finished.
But basically, its procedurals mixed with textures (mostly proc though, as i use this scene to work up my proc-skills)
PedramK
06-05-2002, 04:28 AM
Ok, finaly time for some colored renders ;)
the grass still needs some detailwork to get the correct look
but heres another progress shot
soon i have to mapp the vines and the leaves, which i fear the most of doing! scary stuff
anyway, here it is
comments or crits, or maybe suggestions?
http://w1.500.telia.com/~u50016586//images/CGT/eF_017.jpg
oh those trees look pretty..my only comment would be something to define the edge of the door, you know like when you cut a limb off a tree and it starts to form that smooth ridge where it heals... yeah thats what id like to see

wow, excellent job man!!! only crit i have is that your shot is too narrow to actualy depict a forest and the camera position does a good job on hiding the rest of the enviroment, so you're not really giving the forest look.
And there is something really weird about the pic...NOISE? Something has been straining my eyes, and i think your pic is full of noise!!
Other than these, it looks like a painting!!
Really really like this image... it's coming on exceptionally well.
It has all of the designs and style that I would love to have had my character in - but know that I could never achieve!
The texturing is pretty much flawless - but there are a couple of things that seem a little odd at the moment...
The door looks a little wierd, I think it's the perspective and shape of the tree - it seems as though it should curve around the tree a little... but maybe it's just because it stands out since it's untextured.
The vines are a bit 'tube' like right now - but given the detail you've put in everything else, I'm sure they're going to come out very well indeed.
All in all a brilliant job, I can't wait to see it finished!

Your bark textures are great!! Awesome!! Brilliant!!
I think the reason that the door looks a bit wrong is because it's a completely different colour to the surrounding tree - and it would make sense for them to have made it out of the same wood... Well, in my opinion, anyway :p

i agree with all said on the door, and add for the vine:
I think i've seen vines, damn i had vines all over my old house and they were a bit more "definite". Yours looks a bit like grass on vine, it reminds me of somewhat algae, whereas vine has large leaves that are visible from a distance.

hmmm, i think it's a too bright color for autumn (the tree leaves). Plus, if you're making autumn, you should also change the lighting, and the grass and a lot of stuff.
BTW, the little hole on the tree on the bottom, it has a different texture, why? And that door....hmm, maybe it's because it's so perfectly shaped, and the texture would be nicer, if it was old wood, not cut so perfectly. IMPERFECTION, the key to everything!

for that matter except the leaves. And as it is now, i will go back
to spring/summer colors, as the direction of the image i had
planned in was a warm and friendly environment.
The differently colored piece in the hole is the windowframe and
is currently not textured, but it will be. ;)
Yea, the door is still fubar. But when it comes to imperfections,
you have to take in consideration the object, and the size of
imperfections and tear such an object would have. And also the
distance to that object. As it is now, i goto change the color of
the door and perhaps add even greated tear to it.

Please forgive me for messing with your pic but I figured it would be easier to show what I was thinking rather than try to explain it.
I thought something like this would tie your door nicely into the rest of the tree.

hey!! i think ZrO-1 did a find job on the frame of the foor. The foor, is looking a bit better, but the frame (the tree, healed) looks a lot more natural!!

coool
one thing that stood out was the door is too flush with the tree

The leaves in the background need more color variation. The tree needs more brown saturation

Thx all.
psumo, do you mean on the render with the orange leaves or on
the render with the green leaves? :)
Here is an update

damn man!! i feel like i can touch the bark!! great!! Still, that door though.....i think i spotted something that wasn't said before. It feels wrong perhaps because the door is sort of aligned with the camera, instead of being a bit more aligned with the tree.It feels more natural to make the foor at right angle to the tree, i think. At the moment, the door appears to be extremely tilt!

diazgl, i think im gonna go with the horisontal door.
Weird to have a opening not horisontal with the ground, be it a gnomelair ;)
Anyway, iv remade the door, the old one wasnt good enough.
here is a lil shot of it
(pardon the size, was meant for personal testing, but i decided to share it nevertheless ;) )

Love the new renders..really rich. Think I like springtime more still though. :)
The new door is looking cool, much more homebrew, fits in with the style of the railing better. Only thing I'd say that seems out of place is the hinges, they don't seem to be very into metalwork, and what happened to the thing about 'cold iron' and faerie folk? :) Just a thought.

yeah that door looks much better...also i think zr0 had some good advice...some type of cut to seperate the door from the tree would fit in really nice
what is the render time on a frame right now?
diazgl
06-10-2002, 09:56 AM
uhm perhaps i didn't explain as good. I meant that maybe the door needs to be rotated a bit around the y-axis (lw's y axis is pointing upwards, that's what i mean)

Hey all, thx for your comments.
hype, yea, your right about that, but i cant see any other option
besides either removing them and replacing them with wooden
bars on the back,as there aint much space for them on the front
side. or just..leave em be :) though im open for suggestions
when it comes to the hole for the door, a simple hole wouldnt
create a bulge at its edges. but then again, im no expert
on trees. and changing the geometry will require me to uvwmap
it again ;) which i am not looking forward to.
anyway, here is an image i rendered out on saturday.
Will probably a while until next update, when i get the gnome
rolling. :/

wow! Good work FX. Can't c nething wrong with it, although perhaps if you:
put a lightsource behind the tree to make it stand out more from the background. The shadow behind the tree is very dark and considering how biright the rest of the scene looks.
The trees in the background looks really flat now almost like u just used a plane and mapped it.
nevertheless really nice job, its gonna b exiting to c the final piece.

I like the job you did in setting the door into the tree. It looks better now. I have to say I agree about the door's angle to the camera...but if it's going to mean remapping the tree just to tweak the door I wouldn't bother. You could always just stick an extra gnome infront of the door and I bet it would hide it really well.

... well, I think your model looks a bit too much like a photograph; I mean: you should maybe try to move away from that iperrealistic kind of lighting, to create something more magical. Slightly colored rim lights and a dark/light mapped key light would do miracles, in my opinion. I'm not trying to be ipercritical (I love your work so far :) ), but I think that with this lights setup your image looks a bit too flat and it is difficult to read the distinction between foreground and background. Adding DOF and something blurry very close to the camerea would add a great depth to your image too.
Ah, and about the door: maybe you could push it a bit more inside the tree, so it can catch a bit of shadow on its border, adding more detail to that part of the tree.
Anyways, can't wait for updates! :)

Long time has passed since the last update!
But again, the time of update has come ;)
i slapped in the gnome and tweaked the environment a tad
the volume light/fog is still under construction
atm, it has way too few rays and is way too dense
and well..the rest of the scene is under small tweaks when i find
time to work on it.

How did I miss this?!?!?!
That's a superb work! I am interested in adding a few questions though:
1. The textures on the trees, are they procedural or painted?
2. This is more a sugestion then a question, but I don't think the textures on the fences are convincing at the moment. Maybe a more brwonish texture instead of gray?
Keep it up :)

Well, you know about the things I would comment about in that last pic so I don't have anything constructive to add....but I will say I like how you added in the gnome in such a subtle way. Nice job, I'm glad you didn't just stick him in there.

Thx for the comments
Viper, The bark material is mostly procedural.
And yea, im still a bit halfhearted about the fencematerials.
at first they had an all gray material, then i added a spoon of
brown color..but still, they feel not brown enough.
better and better:thumbsup:

well, you head all we had to say, its definitely a winner on the graphics side of things.
As a final crit, i only have to say that it doesn't fill the title 100%, other than that, awesome job.

Hmmm, I think this piece suxx...lol
Nah, great work FX! The tree is photorealistic, actually everything looks photorealistic exept perhaps the trees in the background.
Nothing more to say really. U tha man! :)

PedramK, I do have one crit on that last pic.
You added in those rays of light coming in from the edge and casting onto the tree, but you don't have the actual shadows that would cause those rays anywhere in the scene. One way I think you could avoid having to put shadows being cast onto the trees and foreground would be to shorten the rays up a bit so the end visually before they get to the tree trunk. If you carry them as far as you have then you need to place a shadow somewhere for it.
Just my 2 cents. As you already know I think this piece rocks. Just fix up that one little thing.

Thanks for you comments lads, ;)
and those rays are coming from the light that is the sun in the
scene and casting the shadows in there.

Thanks for all the comments lads ;) (and for those stars OZ)
Was really fun participating, even though at some points really
demoralizing to watch the other entries evolve. (heh and still is!)
Hope i can participate in the next contest.
