I'm into a joint based facial rig setup that's fast to setup but slow to animate.

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how I could set up poses for the different facial expressions I'd like to use, a library of expressions I can hook up to a shelf buttons or any other way I could make it easier and fast to pose my control handles of the facial rig.

For example if I want a smile I click the smile button on my shelf and the characters face now has a smile on it or another interface that's fun to work with.

My first thought would be set driven key but I'm sure there's a few ways to do this and I'm sure someone has a really cool idea on how to set this up so I'm presenting this thread.

using 2009.

Thanks

I've been having a blast with the Anzovin Face machine.

If you're not familiar with it all you do is activate the plugin, line up elements like eyes, mouth, nose, jaw, teeth, etc. Once you get familiar with it you can rig a face in under an hour. It also offers a free plugin to allow you to use it on other machines in case you have to send it to a farm. You can also use it to just rig the face, then copy the mesh to make your blend shapes. But it gives you a lot of control and is pretty believable.

It about $200.

Hope this helps.

If you are interested in just recording poses for later use, I think there are a few scripts out there that can help. Off the top of my head:

pose2shelf (http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/downloads/scripts-plugins/animation/c/pose-2-shelf)
poseLib (http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/downloads/scripts-plugins/animation/c/poselib)
poseMAN (http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/downloads/scripts-plugins/animation/c/poseman-pose-manager--2)

Super great exactly what I was looking for.

Face machine is great. I bought it and I'm planing on using it for future rigs.

Thanks heaps.

I found some tutorials on youTube but they don't help much. I hate complaining about great freeware stuff, sorry but maybe someone knows of a good tutorial?

Thanks

Unfortunately I have only used pose2shelf and poseLib and never tried poseMAN. If you're keen on the UI of poseMAN but are having difficulty, give poseLib a try. It is very easy to use and is very flexible. From what I just read today poseMAN may lack some features that poseLib has (the ability to apply a pose to only the selected controls, but I can't confirm that). poseLib is also well documented at the author's website.

pose2shelf is great for creating selection buttons as well as poses. I use it to create character specific shelves full of my selection combinations.
