View Full Version : How to make the reflection blurry/bumpy
rsalonen 05-24-2002, 10:04 PM How can I make the reflection on the surface a bit blurry or bumpy without asign a bump map on the actuall surface?
I want this because I will have a rainy enviorment, and the floor shall not reflect the other areas so clear, it shall be a bit blurr/bumpy.
What I tried was to make a water procedual connected to a 2d and a 3d bump (I tried both) and via the bump connected to the reflectivity on the surface shader.
The resualt wans't any different from what it was before. I have probably done something wrong, if not all.
When I connected the bump the the surface shader I used the connection editor and connected the Bump Deph to the Reflectivity.
So please, anyone know how to make this possible?

if you just wanna blur the reflection map decrease the filter of filter offset value under effects for the texture. filter offset just descrease very very slightly. both will blur the map.

okay, thanks svenip, but do you know how to make it bumpy?

)i wouldn't use the same map that i use for the reflection. i guess you wanna do a fine-rough metal like thing ? then maybe i would blend the reflection map with a fine-line by line beside map (do you know what i mean ? :hmm: ) i wouldn't make it with bump, because bump is a light trick and reflection are also based on the specular highlight of a surface (also light dirven). so i would try to blend the bumpy thing into the reflection map. just with a simple blend utility for the first try.
so i tried, and now i would recommend to do both. just the thing above and the new map also use as a bump map, with a smaller bamp value. this will help the effect a bit more.
i would be good if you can describe what you wanna do more specific. then it would be easier to help.

I was actually not able to do any of the ways
Where is that filter offset thingy?
Well, I here have a test render of it (very ugly), it's actually a platform, pretty much like a place in Episode 2 where it rains (no names, avoiding Spoilers of anykind)
And the ground is reflecting as you can see, I want the reflections to be blurry of some kind.

You see the reflections of the border around it in the floor...I want it to be a bit blurry, or bumpy as said before.
(and yes, the glow and light will be tweaked)

ahh you made it by raytracing :)
so that's something completely different. hmmm i don't found a way now to make raytraced reflections blury. if it's possible then with a utillity i guess. but raytracing is just reflecting what i gets. just like the same with raytraced shadows. i will try to find a solution till tomorrow. :hmm:
just a little but i guess not very usefull thing maybe. make the ground a little bit glow, just 0.1 and lower the color a bit to to cover the glow effect a bit. then it looks a bit blurry.
but really this can not be the solutions

Oh, I'm very sorry not for telling it was made with raytracing, for me reflections on a surface is raytracing, can't tell the difference, new to 3d
It's gotta be possible, I mean, i've seen pictures with this wet grounds where lights bounce and they look very blurry and stretched out...So there goota be way.
I really appreciate it if you look into it tommorrow.
I really have to make second svenip statue for this :p
EDIT: ah thanks for the tip, gotta try that too tommorrow
Now the bed screams for me. *yawn*

i found something on my link table.
it's on pixho.com. go to the box "TOOLBOX" and select MEL Scripts. in there the second one refBox & refBoxRender can do the job. it takes a time to setup but is doing a great job. but it's still with env map reflection map.

Thanks for the tip, it might work, but I haven't figured out how to setup it yet.
I dowloaded it and putted it in My Documents > Maya > 4.0 > Script directory.
But when I execute refBox.mel via the script editor nothing happens. I don't get the refBoxRender in my render options as it says in the document.
Can't seem to find anything it has done.
You know how to use this script, because it sertanly looks to be a way to make this.

at first i always copy the scripts directly into the maya dir
c:\AW\maya\scripts\other
then you first need to source the script "source refBox.mel" after that you need to call the main func, that always is the same name "refBox". sometimes you only need to source a script.
look into your script editor if a error occurs or something

HERE (http://www.highend3d.com/files/screen.3d?group=mayashaders&file_loc=blurred_reflection-v1.0-.mb) is a shader that does blurred reflections. I haven't used it. It is available on www.highend3d.com
