Hi there,
Im going after the ambitious project of attempting to make a Full Metal Alchemist short fan film, which if any of you are familiar with the series will know its laden with interesting effects that would be fun to translate to 3d.

Anyway to the current question at hand (one of many i bet).

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how i would be able to pull this effect off. When an alchemist grows an object from the ground it pulls the surrounding material to create the object. Im not too sure how i'll have the top yet but im thinking i'll just be cheap and make it glow bright white so the top of the deformation will be hidden.

Would realflow be able to pull this off? would this be done dynamically?

My only idea of how to this is with blendshapes (for the overall main growth) and animated bump map/normal map (for the growing squares on the side). However i dont think this will really give me the result i want because the sillahoutte of the growth will be roundish and not have the growing chunks of rock shooting up.

I think it should be done dynamically because i need it to grow into different shaped objects such as weapons and what not.

Heres an example i drew:

sorta like these rocks

Heres an example of an alchemist using the ground to create a barrier.

Hmm...interesting idea!

I think its less a question about which program and more depedant on choice of camera shots. Blend shapes could be used to show the wall emerging from the ground though you'd need to line up the wireframe so that you can drag out a near enough dead straight lift for the front of the rocks face, which is going to require atleast some level ground infront of the wall. Could use bump maps i suppose to make it look a little more randomized i suppose but its not going to be an easy task to reproduce the look the show has :p

If you need an extra hand on anything feel free to drop me a message, watching FMA atm myself for the first time and im hooked so..:p

you can achieve a similar effect using 'transform component' in maya for the 2nd picture.

kinda like so:

Thanks so much for answering guys!

MrJuzah -
I've been doing some tests with animated displacement maps and blendshapes which are looking promising. Yeah i love FMA, my favourite anime series ever.

Dare-o -
i never knew of this, this will really help at work, thanks.
