Title: The portrait
Name: Luc Bégin
Country: Canada
Software: 3ds max, VRay, ZBrush

Hi all!

Here's my last creation, my goal was to do a realistic portrait in 3d of a normal perso, and trying to make him look alive.

I think doing cg character is always a challenge it has so many details we have do deal with to make it look real, it's fascinating how the human body is complex and subtil at the same time.

I did it using 3dsmax, rendered with Vray 1.5 sp4 and I used Hairfarm for the hairs.

Hope you like it.

Here is my wip thread.

Wow, it's a really great portrait you've got there ! You didn't fall into the annoying too red sss in the ears, your shading is very subtle. And most important in this kind of subject, eyes are extremly realistics. You've nicely brake the symmetry on his nose and on his expression.
Really, that's a fantastic job !!! Beau boulot !!! http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_5.gif

It looks alive, great work! for non trained eye, it could be taken as a photo. For me eye highlight/reflection too strong/sharp pops out too much. Maybe some environment could helped.
And some more skin tone variation could add extra realism.

This is really an amazing piece of work, great job.

There's only a couple things I see that could be improved a little. The beard looks great but the hair on the top of his head looks a little too much like fur. I think this is a specularity issue but I'm not sure. Next is the square reflection on the eyes. They have good shape but could be just a little bit softer. I find that's an issue with area lights or image planes a lot. They have too sharp of a reflective falloff. Finally the subject's right ear could use some warmer tones from SSS, the shadows are a little too dark, but once again, great work.

This is probably the most photo-real 3d portrait I've seen, If you were to really nit pick the scalp hair maybe is the only slight give away. In saying that I have come across people with a similar hair type, especially after just being washed and brushed. The sss skin shader is the best I've seen from Vray and the sculpting work is flawless. Congratulations on this one!

Please tune down the chromatic aberration by at least 50%, it'll still be there, yet, not obvious and "in your face" which detracts from the purely awesome rendering!

This is top notch work on the field of photo realism! I'm loving every pixel of it. :buttrock:

Cette image est si bonne qu'elle mérite que j'en fasse une critique constructive. D'autant plus que c'est toujours un plaisir pour moi de tomber sur de talentueux québécois.

1. The thing that I most appreciate is how much hair there are. It really pays off on the cheeks and the neck.
2. I would have liked it better if the hair wasn't out of focus. It prevents us from appreciating the detail.
3. Despite the fact that the skin shader is very realistic, the skin still tends to look smooth. Especially near shadowed areas.
4. Maybe next time you could texture his scalp with no tan. (I've never seen someone do it.)
5. The shape of the eyes is perfect, they look alive but I think the texture should appear sharper.
6. The ears look a little bland on the picture.
7. Finally, I think there might be a little too much SSS.

Edit: Someone told me I was too severe but it's simply because it's a near-perfect image that I act this way. When it's that good, it's as if the flaws were more apparent. Anyway, why would my word count? I don't even have a portfolio... Whatsoever, it's a 5 stars image and I even posted it on IMDB's Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn board since I wish the film could look that good and I'm afraid it might not. I hope this clears a few things.

Great work, man!

This is one of the most realistic 3D portraits I've ever seen. The only thing that make your work looking a render is the hair and its integration. The hair is really good, but is not as real as the face. Compare your final image with a version only with eyebrows and beard.

And his eyes... wow, absolutely alive!

A lot of the realism seems to be coming from texturing? Can you show the color texture you used?

How about doing some subtle animation with the model? Just a slight head turn, an eye blink or some small lip movement?

Salut Luc.

Hey thank you very much to all of you! I really appreciate your kinds comments :)

Hi all,

Think it will be interesting showing you this, I did new eyes set up much more complexe then the other one, they give me full control over everything, funny to play with, and I did a blue eye and think to test it on my portrait character, and what a surprise, it changed him a lot!

here are some test I did, a green one, dark brown and an 2 blue,

[...] For me eye highlight/reflection too strong/sharp pops out too much. Maybe some environment could helped.
And some more skin tone variation could add extra realism.

That is so NOT true. It depends on the lighting and a person's `sweatiness` (I don't know how to express that in medical terms)
What I do know is:
1. The face and all it's features look very much alive, very real, unlike anything I've ever seen before (in organic-modeling photo realism).
2. The lighting rig (if I can call it that) is also very much real, you can meet those exact appearances in real life with real lighting.
3. It must have taken you quite a while tweaking shaders/materials/lighting.

and...
4. Awesome job man!
Like Jake Sully would say : "OUTSTANDING!"
