View Full Version : character: guera
okkio 09-16-2003, 07:12 AM Hi all, here is my latest character. I'm modelling him in maya to learn the package. Please rip it to bits, as he's still very much in production, and your comments would be very helpful!
I will also model armour/ clothing for him, then rig and animate him... hopefully all with the help of you guys!

thankyou Polymorph. Are there any areas you can see that could do with improvement?? I'm working on the back of his thighs, and his hands atm, but if you have any suggestions on other areas let me know!

Pretty cool stuff!!!

thankyou wgreenlee 1, though I should clarify: I've been using Maya for only roughly a week, I have used max scince v 3.1. (around 1999/2000 I think...) Thanks to MJpoly tools mel scripts, my modelling workflow in maya is not far off my workflow in max.... apart from the fact that maya subdivs are so slow!!
thats very nice.
Maybe one day i'll be this good with Maya.

I like the model , good proportions , maybe some muscle are not realist but he's not human so ... anyway after a week it's a very good work

troy: thankyou.
jjack: thankyou, and yes some of the models muscles are not realistic, I was kinda going for a mix between realistic, and really exagerated. Having said that, I am aiming to have the body as anotomically correct as possible, just really exagerated and over defined in some areas, so if you have some feedback as to the areas that need attention to bring them into line with more realistic position/ shape, let me know!

jjack: thankyou for your ideas, I'm doing another modelling pass over the next few days, I'll definately keep your tips in mind, and post the results when I get a chance.

thanks for the reply AniMo. I am new to Maya, though have experience with Max. Once you understand one package, transferring that knowledge into another is quite painless. I was planning to update this WIP a little sooner, though I've been swamped with work. I'll post some updates in the next week or two.

This is just amazing! Your modelling skills are top notch! I really like the flo of the model, it seems so natural.
Could you post any wires pre-subdevision?

Yes, this model is really quite amazing. One thing that bothers me anatomicaly is the back of the neck. You have the trapezius modeled out very well, but there is this little dent that shouldnt really be there. I marked the trapezius and circled the dent that was bothering me.

Of course this may be a matter of personal style. I am still getting used to Max after using Maya for some time, so what you are doing right now is absolutely amazing to me. Good job.

finally I've had time for a little update. Still pretty rough in many areas though it's starting to take shape. I've brought it back into max to finish the modelling as I was really missing things like soft select (that magnets thing in maya just doesn't compare) user view rotation, and true sub div modelling. (this could be just my ignorane, as this is the 1st thing I've done in Maya) I'll bring it back into maya when it's time to map rig and aniamte him.
I brought him into a better rest pose, and now will be refining muscle vien and tendon detail. ONce again all crits are encouraged, that's why it's up here!
Excuse the rough renders with shadow artifacts etc, I don't quite have the time to set it all properly right now.

Maybe reduce some of the creases around the nose, he looks like he's also about to sneeze or smells something really bad.
Very cool model.

Here are some images from the above rotation. I've added vien detail to the arms and am now working on the face and neck. I'll then work back down the body on a final pass before starting to model armour/ clothing:

wow, this thread has been brought back from the dead! I have been updating this model, and planning to update the thread with my progress, but am just waiting to finish my spiderman animation (look in my signiture for the thread) It should be finished in the next few weeks, then I'll start updating this thread again. I have been working on topolgy, and riggin for this character, so hopefully the next update will contain a shaded view, wirefraame, and some rigging tests. This character will eventually be used in a short sequence, but more on that later!

VEry nice model!!:scream:
I'd really like to see the edge-loops and your topology...
but first I was wondering how you achieve the veins... are they geometry or Bumpmaps? zbrush?
i think the upper body is well done.. but the lower seems to have feminin quality. it looks pear shaped and a little squashed

Great Model man!!! I like the exaggerated anatomy, it has a very consistent quality. I try to imagine him walking and than I can`t help but think that his feet might be a bit too large. I once had a similar character proportion wise and it was very difficult to get a decent walkcycle. But since this is a modelling project, who cares anyway about the animation...
my 2 cents

just curious! were all the renders above done in MAX (Vray) or maya (MR) since you said you are new to maya.

Thanks for replies. I imported him into max to render in vray. I hate rendering in maya!

excellent model!
i see something strange in the head, maybe it needs to be wider or less elongated, perhaps you could move the mouth to the front, i don't know, it's only an idea.
I think this character needs a lot of hair for almost all his body, and you could add some warts or bulges over his shoulders...
