View Full Version : CryEngine2 - Realtime Fantasy Game Environment (Warning: Huge Screenshots!)

Greetings,

i'd like to show you the first screenshots of my upcoming realtime fantasy game environment project. Please excuse the huge filesize! I used "CryEngine 2" to realize this fantasy scenario and hope to finish it very soon.

The fantasy scene i created is just for portfolio purpose and there won't be a deathmatch map or something like that. This thing is not a mod, although the fps would be adequate for use in a video game.

On my old "Intel Quadcore 6600" (using a "Ati Radeon HD 4870" graphic card) the map runs fine (System -> Win7 64 bit with high graphic specs ingame). The fps are between 13 and 26 frames. They would be even better if i spent more time on optimization, but since this project is just for visual demonstration i focussed more on design than on performance.

All models have been created by me, except some of the original crysis plants & rocks and two small tree model packs, the "European Nature Set" by Michael Betke and the "Pine Tree Pack" by "Mr.Guybrush II" and "Orange_Duck". I used 3D Studio Max, ZBrush and Photoshop for the models (and some other little tools) and the Sandbox2 editor (respectively the Crysis SDK) for the map itself.

I will upload more screenshots and an ingame trailer within a few weeks. I will also post more information when it's done.

There're are also two german online articles about the project on the homepage of the "PC Games Hardware" magazine:

Hope you'll like the first screens.

Beautiful work, how long have you been working on this for ?

Love the fantasy setting, I can see some 'LOTR' inspiration therein. Because of the ornate architecture, the skull waterfall seems slightly out of place.

Keep it up !

Regards.

I think you need to find a better host for your images, says "Bandwidth limit exceeded" here :)

First of all, thank you very much!

And please excuse the bandwith problem! It should be fixed now!

That is a heck of a portfolio piece, in fact I would say this by itself should get you an interview at most places for an environment artist position.

wow! just wow!

You said upcoming... that means we can see it in motion yes?
My eyes are watering in anticipation :D
Looking forward to more... and is this all walkable in first person?

Great work!

Beautiful stuff!

Would it be possible to see some of the assets/buildings in wireframe?

Hello people,

first of all thank you very much again. I've to admit that i'm absolutely suprised by the reaction in other forums and the web, so please excuse my delayed response to this thread.

To answer some major questions.:

1.) Are there enterable interiors?

Yes. There are also interiors. The problem is, that i had not the time to post them, although i concentrated on outdoor. Please keep in mind that this is still w.i.p.! If i had the time, i would like to add a lot more things, like different animals, NPCs and other stuff.

2.) It looks so full of stuff. Does the map works in terms of gameplay?
Well. I've to admit, that i choose screenshot angles, that don't show the paths and ways which i added to the map. But as already mentioned - my goal wasn't to create working gameplay, but to create a visual scenery, although walking through the map is possible.

3.)Are there images of the wires, spec maps, diffuse maps? Any normal maps or high poly sources? Tris count etc?
Of course. I will upload the images of the props soon. Since i'm a littlebit out of time at the moment, this may take a while.

4.) Will you release the map?
I did this scene for application for employment, since i made my diploma in visual design two months ago. If things calm down again i think about releasing the scene to the public, including the models (would be difficult to watch the map without them) and the TOD configs.

Thanks again! I'm really happy that most of you seem to enjoy the screenshots! ;)

Best regards,
Finn Meinert Matthiesen

Wow this looks alot more amazing than I thought it would when I clicked the thread.

Thank you. ;) I think, that it's difficult to show game art at CG, since it's more focussed on real render images or characters. At least the reaction in game design forums was very nice.

Btw.: If you're interested, here's a short link to the crymod forums where i posted the stuff at first: Thread at CryMod forums (http://www.crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=62279)

@imageen: Yes... i'm sorry for that. This display and file streaming issue shouldn't be a problem on my deviantArt profile, since they're automatically posted as thumbnails there.

I just wondered, to put your work into perspective, how long this piece took you in modelling and texturing terms, and maybe how you went about putting the environment together.

Did you do it all in a month? or more

how long might a building take you, modelling/texturing ?

Thanks for sharing your awesome work

Thank you very much!

@KINGOMONKEY: It took me about ten weeks to create the whole scene (including getting into the crysis sdk & modelling the props in 3d max). I also had to work to make a living, so on some days i couldn't even take a hand on the scene.

Really impressive work! Ten weeks is pretty good going with a normal job to hold down.

Any chance of posting a video walkthrough as well?

great work!... I understand you work at Crytek, is that partly because of this environment?... would love to see some of the making of this, any wires etc you could post would be great.

I've been looking into game engines recently, UDK or Cryengine, both can do awesome stuff but the fact that cryengine 3 should be available to the public this summer might swing it..

..and hello from Essen!

Exquisite work.

Since my browser was slowing down, I went to DA to check out the images there itself and WOW. I am left speechless. I am learning on how to model things in 3D and watching these renders, well the best way to put is that my jaw fell through the ground made a hole there came out on the other side of the planet. :buttrock: :bounce:

I am a Hardcore gamer and wanted to learn more about integration of game engines in a modelers day to day life[ I don't know anything about them, n don't know where to begin], so when I saw this I was blown apart.

Excellent work

Um yeah, I dumped most of the pictures here and from your site into my 3D Inspiration folder so I can stair at them longer. I got a question about your work flow. I do everything in Sketchup and Maya so I'm guessing it be sorta the same for you. Did you go through and draw out the buildings as image planes first or did you just go and model a bunch and figure out where they would look nice? Other then that nice work!
